Monash
Metro is the name coined to identify Monash’s
Melbourne and Metropolitan campuses, centres and clinical
schools. Monash Metro consists of the Berwick,
Caulfield, Clayton, Parkville and Peninsula campuses; the City Conference Centre
and Monash Law Chambers; and the Clinical Schools located at the
Alfred Hospital, Box Hill Hospital and Monash Medical Centre. The distinctive Monash
Metro
graphic symbolises the real physical and academic links, as well as the
virtual and electronic links between the campuses. Monash Metro
connects students and staff to each other, through links with
education, research and management activities as well as sport and
recreation activities. In initiating the
concept of Monash Metro, we aim to build a greater sense of
cohesion across the metropolitan campuses and to encourage greater
sharing of opportunities and resources across these campuses.
For most students and staff, ‘Monash’ is the campus or centre at
which they are based. In 2005, student enrolment at all Monash
campuses was 40,429. By far the greatest number of these students,
33,671 or 83%, were enrolled at one or more Monash Metro
campus. Similarly, the total number of staff (Full-Time Equivalent)
working at all Monash campuses was 5,299 and of that number, 4,946
or 93% were employed across the metropolitan campuses.
By virtue of their physical proximity and close academic
connections, the Monash Metro campuses provide wide ranging
opportunities to students and staff. Monash Metro students
and staff may choose to use any Monash Metro campus as a
gateway to any other Monash Metro campus. Park and Ride
facilities are available via intercampus shuttle buses running between Clayton and Berwick, Clayton and Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula
and Berwick and Peninsula campuses. Students or staff
living near one Monash Metro campus but based at another may
travel to their nearest campus and then take the Monash Metro
shuttle bus to their home campus.
Monash Metro Shuttle Bus passengers, other than those
holding a Monash Community Card are required to purchase a $2.00 ticket
at the bus stop to
travel one-way on all services. In 2007, an upgrade to the
service has meant that larger buses can carry many more passengers
on the Berwick and Peninsula runs than was possible in 2006.
As part of the Monash Education Plan 2006-10, subject to
course regulations and the availability of resources, students based
at one Monash Metro campus may choose to undertake part of
their studies at another Monash Metro campus. The idea is
that students may take advantage of the specialised units and
activities available at any Monash Metro campus. Some
faculties offer common units at more than one Monash Metro
campus, providing students with greater flexibility of where and
when they choose to study those units. The use of information and
communication technology also enables students to participate
remotely in some classes offered concurrently at more than one
Monash Metro campus.
Educational technologies currently enable students to log onto
the Monash website, gain access to their enrolment and unit
information, access email, the Library, their own study pages and
download a wide range of lectures and other study facilities.
Monash Metro students and staff may use facilities and
services such as the library, learning commons and general purpose
IT laboratories on any Monash Metro campus. Students may also
use Student Services Centres on any campus.
Staff can now make use of any Monash Metro Campus Business
Lounges while they are visiting any Monash Metro campus.
These Business Lounges provide basic office facilities including
workspaces with phone, fax, email and Internet connections, printing
and photocopying. These Lounges will enable staff to connect to, read and send emails, print reports or photocopy
material and work in their ‘other office’ while away from their home
campus.
