Clinical Schools - linking you to the
Monash metropolitan community
The Faculty
of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is made up of eight Schools
including the Central and Eastern Clinical School and the Southern
Clinical School. Both undergraduate teaching and research are
conducted within the schools that have links with the major research
institutes, situated within the faculty and externally.
Central and Eastern Clinical School
The
Central and Eastern Clinical School (CECS) coordinates the
teaching of Monash’s MBBS students at teaching hospitals within
Bayside Health, Eastern Health, Cabrini and the Institute of
Forensic Medicine. It also teaches immunology to undergraduates in
science and biomedical science.
The majority
of the school’s teaching is conducted at The Alfred Hospital, Box
Hill Hospital, Maroondah Hospital and Cabrini Hospital.
The Alfred,
located in Prahran, operates a unit in every specialist medical and
surgical discipline, except Paediatrics and Obstetrics, and has
major trauma, burns and heart & lung transplant departments.
Box Hill and
Cabrini hospitals are integral to the Departments of Medicine and
Surgery’s teaching programs to smaller groups of students. Students
at these hospitals enjoy the small community atmosphere and ease of
getting to know everyone quickly.
CECS has a
structured clinical teaching program that extends beyond Patient and
Theme Based Learning with timetabled teaching in most specialist
medical disciplines offered by the hospital including Radiology.
Emphasis is based on bedside skills as well as theoretical
knowledge. An extensive lecture and tutorial program is given by
senior clinicians. Access is available to the latest in research
and development advances in medicine and a challenging and
supportive learning environment is offered.
The
Central and Eastern Clinical School
encourages multidisciplinary research across
previously separate fields and attracts elite students, researchers
and teachers to its modern research laboratories and facilities. It
aims to incorporate its research products into clinical practice and
aspires to join with commercial ventures and to contribute to the
treatment and cure of several specific diseases. Research is
undertaken by the Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Forensic
Medicine, Immunology and Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine and many
opportunities for PhD studies are always available.
Southern Clinical School
The
Southern Clinical School
is the second largest School in the Faculty of Medicine,
Nursing and Health Sciences. It is comprised of two major research
Institutes and a number of clinical departments including: Medicine,
Nutrition & Dietetics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics and
Surgery. Most of the School’s teaching and research activities are
based off the main University campus at Monash Medical Centre (MMC)
although these activities also extend to a number of external sites
including Dandenong Hospital, Moorabbin Hospital, Frankston Hospital
and the Kingston Centre. The School also has strong links with other
parts of the Faculty and other Monash Faculties.
The School has a major focus on research
activities. MMC is home to the Monash Institute of Medical Research
and the Monash Institute of Health Services Research. The School
also has strong links with Prince Henry’s Institute, which is based
at MMC. As well as laboratory and health services research there is
also a strong focus on clinical research in close collaboration with
the staff of Southern Health. The School employs about 300 medical
research scientists who work in around 20 different research
programs.
In addition to research, the School’s
Departments and Institutes conduct a diverse range of undergraduate
and postgraduate teaching programs. Monash Medical Centre is a major
Monash teaching hospital for medical students. The School’s staff
run a number of postgraduate course work programs and also
contribute to teaching of the Faculty’s health science courses at
undergraduate level.
