Orientation welcomes new students

More than 700 new Caulfield campus students started their university life on the right note last week with an al fresco breakfast of muffins, danishes, fresh fruit, tea, coffee and OJ prior to their official welcome to the campus in Chisholm Hall on Wednesday morning.

An academic procession of 24 people, in academic dress, were led into the hall to the sounds of the didgeridoo played by Yarramunua. The procession included the deans of the faculties of Business and Economics, Information Technology, Arts, Engineering and Art & Design and a senior academic from Science as well as the Mayor of Glen Eira.

Following the opening ceremony, current student hosts escorted new students to their faculty welcomes and later took them on guided tours of the campus. The day also included lunch hosted by MONSU and further activities in faculty areas.

On Wednesday evening, over 200 postgrads, part-timers, DE students,
parents and partners got the low down on services at the campus - an activity funded by the University Orientation Committee's 'Special Project' funding scheme. A further 200 new students took part in the Uni Survival Skills Day coordinated by MONSU on Thursday.

Campus director John White said: "Orientation plays a vital role in helping first year students feel comfortable in their new environment."

"I'd like to pass on my congratulations and thanks to Caulfield campus Orientation coordinator  Helen Campbell, the Orientation committee, MONSU and all the student volunteers who helped make Orientation at Caulfield such a welcoming experience."

And the activities continue this week with a range of events being held including clubs day, bands, comedians and a range of other entertainment.

The Opening Ceremony at the Caulfield campus had a particularly Australian feel thanks to didgeridoo player Yarramunua.
