Service Centre Opens

Wednesday 19 November marked the official opening of the Caulfield Service Centre by Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Larkins.

In addition to central student administration the Centre also provides administrative and inquiry services for the faculties of Art & Design, Business & Economics and Information Technology, together with Monash International and the IT Helpdesk.

Peter Yates, Director Services and Systems provided a brief history of the project and Professor Gill Palmer, speaking on behalf of the three major participating faculties said that, " the Centre represented a significant development for faculties in providing a single point for students to access all services."

With its bold, bright access at ground floor level, the Centre can also be used for Open Day and other campus activities and events.

Redevelopment of Fine Arts Building

Last month Monash Art & Design was delighted to celebrate  the completion of the redevelopment of the Fine Arts Building. The building was officially launched on 30th October by guest speaker Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.

Professor John Redmond, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor & Bernard Hoffert

Designed by the award-winning Melbourne architectural firm Lyons, the new development provides studios for drawing, painting, printmedia, photomedia and tapestry.

From Dandenong Road, the entrance is presided over by the highly identifiable original art deco tower.  In dramatic contrast, from inside the campus, observers are treated to the addition striking postmodern yellow tower as the feature entrance to the building.  Light is the central feature of this building, from the entrance atrium through to each of the light infused drawing and painting studios. The space also provides extensive exhibition possibilities and some of the best studio facilities in Australia.

Professor John Redmond, Foundation Dean, Faculty of Art & Design believes that the new building signifies Monash Art & Design’s commitment to the visual arts.  “The opening of the Fine Arts Building represents an important milestone for Art & Design at Monash,” says Professor Redmond.  “

The building complex we now operate from attests to the commitment to excellence that infuses everything we do. We have achieved a lot in a short amount of time and will continue to grow in exciting and innovative ways.”

The introduction of the cutting-edge new Fine Arts complex enhances the overall environment on the Caulfield Campus for students, staff and visitors.   “The existing buildings had always been perceived as the 'back end' of the campus. The new canopy and entrance, with its intense yellow and sculptural form, acts to visually connect these buildings back into the heart of the campus, and to identify the building users,” says Carey Lyon, a Director of Lyons.
