Relay for Life - saving lives

The Anti-Cancer Council Victoria's newest fundraising success, Relay for Life, is happening across the state again in 2001.

Last year, many people from Monash, including a team from the Campus Director's Office and MONSU, were fortunate enough to take part in this overwhelmingly, successful phenomenon.

The Campus Director's Office is again coordinating a team to take part in the Murrumbeena event on 24 and 25 March 2001, and is keen to hear from people who are interested in participating.

What is Relay for Life?
As the name suggests, Relay for Life is a team event to raise funds for cancer. Teams consist of 10 or more people who take it in turns to walk/run around a track for 24 hours. Relay for Life is fun. It is a challenge. It is a sign of solidarity.

What's involved?
1. Contact the Campus Director's office on extn 31000 and register your interest in becoming part of the team. Each team member is required to pay a registration fee of $10, which covers the cost of the fundraising kit.
2. Once the team has registered with the ACCV, fundraising kits will be distributed to each team member. Each kit includes a receipt book, a collection box, a Relay for Life t-shirt and a booklet on fundraising.
3. Start fund raising.
4. Turn up to Duncan McKinnon athletics Track by 12 noon on Saturday 24 March 2001 and get ready to support your team. NOTE: team members are not required to be at the track for the full 24 hours.

Over the course of the weekend, there will be a range of entertainment and prizes as well as a free breakfast to keep the energy levels up.

There is also the moving candlelight ceremony held at dusk. Participants are able to place their own candle tribute around the track in support of survivors or in memory of loved ones lost. Cancer survivors and carers are also invited to lead the first lap that officially signals the beginning of the event.

For further information or to register you interest in joining the Campus Director's team, contact Christel Kent in the Campus Director's Office on extn 31000.

The moving candle light ceremony gives participants the opportunity to remember loved ones lost or show support for survivors.

Orientation Opening Ceremony

The Orientation Opening Ceremony, which officially welcomes new students to the campus, will be held on Wednesday 21 February 2001 at Caulfield.

Staff wishing to take part in the academic procession, need to advise Helen Campbell (if they have not already done so) on extn 32964  by close of business on Friday, 9 February.
