Mid year Orientation

More than 150 international students were welcomed to the Caulfield campus this week at a special Orientation ceremony.

2.                       3.

4.                1. New students enjoy a bite to eat and the opportunity to peruse provided information before undertaking a range of Orientation activities.

2, 3 and 4. The new students are given a warm welcome from Paula Dunstan from Monash International and campus director John White in K3.09.

Changes to UniSuper seminar

Changes are planned to the UniSuper scheme as a result of the merger between TESS and SSAU. The changes are due to a two day meeting of the Board of UniSuper, which reviewed the structure and services of the scheme.

Ted Murphy, UniSuper Director and National Assistant Secretary of the NTEU will report on the decisions of the Board and the changes planned to the scheme at a seminar at Caulfield Campus on 25 July, from 1 pm to 2 pm in B2.15.

This is an opportunity for staff to hear first hand how the changes will impact on the scheme and to ask any questions. All staff welcome.

Symmetry and symmetry breaking

A seminar, 'Symmetry and Symmetry Breaking: Where baby patterns come from', by Dr James Coplien (Bell Labs), will be held at the Caulfield campus on Friday 27 July in B2.18 at 10.30 am.

Seminar abstract:
~~~~~~~~
Everyone who does software design now knows that a pattern is a
"solution to a problem in a context", right? Well, maybe, but they are
more than that. Curiously enough, before he was an architect,
Christopher Alexander was a mathematician with a keen interest in
physics. And, curiously enough, the term "pattern" is well-known to
physicists -- particularly in modern physics -- and has a time- honored
tradition in mathematics, too. While some academics strive to find
formal bases for patterns in UML-like substances or in their favourite
mathematical formalism, they ignore longstanding formal bases for
patterns that can be traced back from computer science through Alexander to the (real) sciences.
