A free health test for one of the causes of chronic fatigueMonash University staff and students are invited to come along to an information session and have a free, simple and painless genetic test for the preventable disease Haemochromatosis next week. This inherited condition causes excessive iron build-up in the body, which can lead to chronic fatigue, impotence, heart and liver disease, diabetes and arthritis. Around 1 in every 300 Australians are at high risk of developing Haemochromatosis and 1 in 10 Australians are healthy genetic carriers of the disease. Fortunately, it has been found that people at high risk can easily prevent the onset of symptoms by making regular blood donations (that the Red Cross Blood Service can use for blood transfusions). While testing previously conducted at the Caulfield campus was restricted to people aged between 18 and 35, testing is now available to all staff and students with no limitations on age. Sessions are being run every half-hour during the following times at the campus next week:
For further information please visit the HaemScreen Website or contact the HaemScreen Project Coordinator on (03) 8341 6314. Staff who would like to advertise the sessions to students can download a powerpoint slide to place on overhead projectors prior to the commencement of or at the completion of lectures.
