World No Tobacco Day
Smoking kills over 19,000 people in Australia each year , and 13 Victorians every
day. Every year World No Tobacco Day on 31 May, aims to raise awareness of the devastating
toll of tobacco in our communities.
The theme for World No Tobacco Day this year Lets Clear The Air
also puts the focus on environmental tobacco smoke. Even if we dont choose to smoke
ourselves, sometimes it is hard to avoid the smoke from other peoples cigarettes.
There are two ways to reduce exposure to environmental tobacco smoke encourage
more smokers to quit, and make more public places, workplaces and homes smoke free.
There is strong support for smoking restrictions in public places. A study published by
Quit earlier this year found that 51% of Victorian surveyed try to avoid smokey venues.
Being exposed to the smoke from other peoples cigarettes can make you feel uncomfortable,
make your hair and clothes smell, but it is also very harmful to your health.
So maybe May 31 is the date to implement some change in your environment.
