Judy Evans - campus nurse
When Judy Evans became the Campus Nurse at Caulfield seven years ago, it was
quite a change from her previous nursing position.
"Prior to this I worked in a hospital environment in the area of acute nursing,
theatre/anaesthetics," she explained. "When this position became available, I
was very excited at the opportunity to work in an educational setting dealing with
students."
Working within a university environment, says Judy, provides a broad range of
opportunities and challenges.
"As the health service is a bulk-billing medical practice I work very closely with
the doctors," she explained. "But I also have my own clients and see people
about a range of issues from lifestyle concerns, vaccinations or travel issues, nutrition,
and sexual health."
"At Community Services we are a multidisciplinary team which includes the
counselling service and a range of allied health services. Working within this environment
means that I can refer clients to our other services and work as a team to provide health
and psychological support."
While working with the student population is important to Judy, at the health service
she also sees a full range of age groups. "We see babies who are often children of
staff or students, but because we are a medical practice servicing the community we also
see people in their nineties."
Judy also has a important role in health promotion and policy making. "Its
important that people know we are here, and what we offer, especially new students."
To this end, you will often see Judy at Student Union activities such as Orientation and
Safe Sex Week.
International student support is also a key component in her health promotion rounds.
"International students often need more support networks than their local
counterparts because they have no family support. At Community Services we have an
international student counsellor."
Judy says that while some people think of the health service as student based, about a
third of their users are staff. "There are very few health services where such a
broad range of expertise can be found in the one place and we are very conveniently
located."
"It is often not until you need assistance that you realise the value of such a
service in the university community," she added.
Judy can be contacted via extn 32500 or email judy.evans@adm.monash.edu.au

Judy sees a range of clients including staff, students and the general
public.
