Open DayThe rain stayed away on the day and visitors were able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the campus during Open Day 2002.
Congratulations to Laurie Webb, Andrew Babarczy and the Open Day campus committee for their work and efforts in organising Open Day as well as all the campus staff who provided a snapshot of campus and university life to visitors. Students take solar challenge to FloridaFour Year 8 students from Box Hill Secondary College will be heading to Florida next month to attend the International Symposium on Renewable Energy thanks to an opportunity provided to them by the Faculty of Engineering at Monash. The students last year took part in and won the National Model Solar Vehicle Challenge - a program developed and run by the Faculty of Engineering at Caulfield. Chair of the challenge organising committee Dr Paul Wellington, says the program, which is in its thirteenth year, provides an opportunity for school students to use their skills in a hands on way to develop non-polluting transport. "The students from Box Hill have taken a very professional approach to the challenge," he explained. "They have not only built a viable car, they have made a video and CD-ROM to support others who would like to get involved in the challenge. "The students also developed a wind tunnel and simulator to test their models' performance under a range of factors such as wind drag, rolling resistance and electronic efficiency." The students will not only attend the Symposium in Florida they will run a workshop for participants about their experience with the Model Solar Vehicle Challenge. The students visited the campus recently, to present their symposium paper, where the Dean of Engineering Professor Mike Brisk congratulated them on their work and presented them with a cheque to help with their trip. "This type of work is just outstanding. The Solar Vehicle project is a challenging project at any level and these students have really shown what it is all about - not only engineering theory but teamwork and collaboration," he said. The concept for the challenge was developed by the Faculty of Engineering in 1990 and is now running in each Australian state as well as Argentina and Canada, where the Monash model is also used. The 13th Annual Solar Vehicle Challenge will be on 19 and 20 October a Scienceworks Museum.

Do you have a favourite soup recipe that is easy to prepare, economical and enjoyable? Community Services is collecting soup recipes from all staff members of the university community on the Caulfield campus. Our plan is to collate the recipes for distribution to students during student survival week. Many
students are on limited budgets. Many are living away from home for the
first time and don't know how to cook or long for the taste of home.
Sharing your recipe could help students to prepare a nutritious
soup and we all know that eating well enhances the ability to learn! Please
send your easy, economical, enjoyable soup recipes to Rochelle
