 Relay for Life

Twenty-six members of the Caulfield campus community participated in the Relay for Life event at Murrumbeena over the weekend of 22 and 23 October.  All members of the team thoroughly enjoyed the event, wearing their Relay for Life tops, eating chocolates at all hours of the day and night and even taking a nibble of the lollipop baton.   The Murrumbeena Relay for Life Event raised in excess of $60,0000 for The Cancer Council of Victoria(funds raised by the Caulfield Team will be confirmed in the next edition of Offcourse).

Part of the Caulfield Campus Team's fundraising activities included a campus lunch held on Wednesday 26 October.  Approximately 100 people attended, enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch and drinks, with Dr. Azita Moradi as the guest speaker.

Dr. Azita Moradi, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Alfred Hospital spoke on Culture and Mental Health and was able to relay some of her points based on personal experience.

Monash Caulfield Bike Users Group (McBUG)

Are you interested? Are you a frequent or not so frequent rider?  Or are you thinking about being a bike rider? We all share the joy of bike riding -   So lets get together.    This group will be connected by email and we plan to circulate information about bike riding at Monash Caulfield and advocate for services and infrastructure that will encourage many of our Caulfield staff and students to leave the car at home and come to Uni by bike.

The birth of this group was at the 2005 Ride-To-Work day breakfast.  It was great to connect with fellow enthusiasts of the 2 wheel transport.  This group will be under the banner of the  get ACCTIVE group and plans include involving other bike user groups already established on other Monash campuses.

The second Ride-to-Work Day for Caulfield for 2005 and the Inagural ride for the Monash Caulfield Bike Users Group (McBug) will be Thursday 15th December.  Join us for breakfast at Red Rhumba in Waverley Road, near the corner of Burke Road from 8.00 a.m. onwards for a breakfast funded by Monash Sport.  All welcome, beginners and experienced riders. Look forward to seeing everyone with their helmuts and bikes for breakfast.  Please contact Judy Evans, Campus/Practice Nurse via email: judy.evans@adm.monash.edu.au to confirm your involvement.

Shiatsu: enhancing the art of life

Shiatsu is a form of bodywork, highly regarded in Eastern countries and increasingly valued in the West as an effective therapeutic technique.

With a theoretical basis in Chinese Medicine, the aim of this Japanese-style treatment is to balance the body’s energy system. The shiatsu therapist determines areas of imbalance which may be causing ill health or which have the potential to do so if left unrecognised.

The therapist uses hands, thumbs, elbows to apply pressure to the body. Particular attention is paid to acupressure points and energetic pathways whilst working also with the nervous system, the circulatory system and the musculature. Each shiatsu treatment is specific to each client and may also include dietary, lifestyle and exercise options. Clients remain fully clothed throughout the session, which is performed on a futon.

Shiatsu is used to alleviate and prevent conditions such as stress, depression, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, headache, back and neck pain, sciatica, menstrual and menopausal syndromes……. Clients experience deep relaxation as tension is released.

A complete healing system in itself, shiatsu is respectful of all healing systems and can complement most other forms of treatment.

Academic Director's Christmas Function

The Caulfield campus community came together yesterday to celebrate Christmas and the upcoming holiday season.  Terry Hogan and band (which included Facilities & Services Manager - Rod Thomas) thoroughly  entertained the campus - even encouraging a couple of members of staff to join him on the microphone.   See the next edition of Offcourse for photos.

get ACCTIVE - keep Active

Monash Sport, in conjunction with the get ACCTIVE group, are providing the campus community to get involved in some fun and friendly sporting activities during the student holiday period. This will provide not only a great chance to keep active (especially for those who have just recently participated in The Monash Challenge) and healthy, but an opportunity to mingle with other staff members from within the Caulfield Campus.

Remember how much fun we had when we were young playing sport and games? Well, this is your chance to re-kindle that love of sport and healthy living with your friends while at work. These sessions are all about coming and trying those old games we loved to play as kids, or just learning how to try a new activity you have never done before.

Appropriate equipment, teaching and demonstrations of each activity will be supplied so that you feel comfortable participating in a safe and friendly environment. We hope that many Caulfield Staff can come out from their offices on Thursday lunchtimes and enjoy this social environment of healthy activity.

The first of these sessions was held on Thursday 17th November, and what a lot of fun was had by all who participated.   Table tennis and volleyball were the sports on offer and there was much laughter and friendly rivalry!!

The activities offered in the second week were dancing and badminton.  Here are some photos from the day .....

Badminton may have been the easier option!!

Other activities that will be offered over the next few weeks include netball, soccer and cricket. The activities occur every Thursday until 15th December, between 1pm and 2pm. If the weather holds up (and if the works to the common lawn haven’t commenced), activities will be held on the Common Lawn, otherwise we will head to the indoor courts of Chisholm Hall in Building S. So round up your work colleagues and get them ready for Thursday lunchtime fun and games. There is no need to RSVP, just be on the lawn in your sports gear ready to go on Thursday at 1pm.
