BusEd program brings community expertise togetherAn innovative new program run by the City of Glen Eira and supported by Monash's Caulfield campus is providing a unique link between local businesses, schools and the tertiary sector. The BusEd program was developed by the council after a need to more closely link the range of expertise in the local area was highlighted. The program consists of four components - a seminar series, a pilot mentoring and coaching program, a business precinct revitalisation program and a webpage. Glen Eira's business development manager Ms Lynda Bredin said the response from the local community, including staff and students from Monash University, had been overwhelming. "The first seminar of the series held recently attracted 130 local business people and leaders as well as educational representatives," she explained. "The aim of the seminar series is to facilitate the cross pollination of ideas between different areas of the local community to benefit all." The first seminar was a largely Monash Caulfield affair with presentations from Irene Powell from Marketing, Paul Wellington from Mechanical Engineering and two students Ingrid Micallef and Michael Grainge. Their presentation, 'How joint initiatives can bring positive outcomes for both business and education', focused on the multi-disciplinary project, which involved Monash Caulfield staff and students from engineering, marketing, accounting and design. The staff and students were involved in undertaking a feasibility study and business plan for food product manufacturer Flavour Makers who were looking at introducing a wet marinade to accompany their range of dry spices for chicken. The keynote address at the seminar was presented by Ken Grant from the Department of Marketing who spoke about innovative marketing in today's global, competitive environment. Lynda stressed that the program was aimed at a wide variety of areas including business management, accounting, graphic design and engineering design. "We are hoping to link interested businesses and individuals to the vast range of expertise based at Monash." Caulfield campus director Mr John White said he was most impressed with the program and the opportunities it provided to the local community as well as Monash staff and students at the campus. "This type of program shows the value of campuses engaging with their local communities," he said. "The Caulfield campus has such a broad range of departmental and individual expertise that can be easily utilised in helping other community members. "Credit must also be given to the academic staff for their energy, involvement and commitment to ensuring both the students and community gain the maximum benefit from this project." John added that the opportunities the program provided for students were invaluable. "It is great for our students to get real world expertise during the course of their degree and put some of their theoretical knowledge into practice." The City of Glen Eira is keen to hear from anyone interested in offering their services or developing a project as part of BusEd.
