New
Vice-Chancellor visits Caulfield
Over
100 staff and students attended the address given by the new
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Larkins, on Wednesday 3
September. Professor Larkins fielded questions on research, funding
and the university's future directions.

Multicultural Week
Multicultural
Week at the Caulfield campus was held during the week 19 August to
22 August. The Overseas Students Services team filled Chisholm Hall
with flags of the world, posters and orange balloon displays. The
colour orange symbolising "harmony", was the theme for this year's
Multicultural Week.
Activities for the week included face painting,
collages, costume show, and dance performances by various cultural groups.

Academic Director's Event
Over
120 staff attended the Academic Director's event held on Tuesday 26 August.
Professor Rob Willis provided the following update:
- Open
Day – approximately 9,000 attended
Open Day at Caulfield Campus, many thanks to all staff and students
for their great work – it was an excellent day.
- Student
Services Centre – will be open mid-September. Jill Falkland has been appointed Manager.
The Student Services Centre is a ‘one-stop shop’ and will be
the contact centre for student admininstration enquiries of the
University– shared services centre doing some administrative tasks
of the Faculties – IT, Bus/Eco and Monash International will be
there some of the time. ITS will have its Helpdesk located
there.
- New
Academic Building and Car Park – model
and information boards are view in the Library (level 2), with
photos and Information Bulletins on the Caulfield Campus
website. We will continue to provide the campus with regular
updates.
- Building
D and E Refurbishment – this work is
now complete, parking in this area is minimal and landscaping work
will be undertaken later in the year near the ‘Fine Arts’ sign, go
over and have a look!
- Staff
and Postgraduate Dining Facility/Club
– planning is underway, and will utilise A1.39, A1.40 and the dining
room, outdoor eating area on the terrace.
- Postgraduate
Student Facilities – Postgraduate
Lounge in A1.38, refurbishment of this room will start in late
September and will be complete one to two months after. The
Lounge will be fitted with swipe card access, computer terminals,
lounges, tables, tea/coffee facilities and microwave.
- Caulfield
Campus Vision – reminder that this
document is available for viewing on the Caulfield campus website, any
feedback/comments please email Helen Dunne
- Bike
Racks/Lockers/Cages – new bike
racks/lockers/cages will be installed on the campus in various
locations in the next few months, some will be lockable and MONSU will
be handling bookings/payments of these.
Monash
Careers & Employment Service
Monash
Careers & Employment Service (formerly MONSEACS) which has been relocated,
renamed and revitalised was officially opened on 1 September.
The opening was two-fold - to celebrate the relocation to Building S,
which has a high student traffic flow and the launch for the new online
Job Seeker's guide for Monash students.

Community Services
The
University Community Services celebrated its official opening of its
new premises on Wednesday
10 September.

Relay for Life
Get a group together from your faculty, department, administrative area, register a team and be involved! Encourage family and friends to join
your team. It is a fantastic event in which
to be involved and this year the Organising Committee is keen for teams from Caulfield Campus to take part in the event.

Women's
Networking and Support Group
If
you would like to join the Women's Networking and Support Group at

The group meets
monthly over lunch to listen to speakers, be involved in workshop and to
network.
Caulfield Farewell
Rochelle
Umansky who has been a counsellor at Community Services, Caulfield for the
past eight years has now departed the campus. Rochelle was a
fantastic member of the Community Services team and will be sadly
missed. We wish her all the very best for her future.
Monyx Monthly Coffee Club
Draw
Food
and Beverage is conducting a monthly Coffee Club Draw across Clayton,
Peninsula, Caulfield and Berwick campuses. The September prize has
been donated by Pioneer Electronics and is a Pioneer surround sound
system.
To enter, simply complete your
coffee card and fill in your name and contact details and place in the
entry box at participating outlets. The September winner will be
notified.
The winner of the trip to Mt.
Buller was a student from the Peninsula campus.

this issue, we are profiling Rod Thomas, newly appointed Manager of
Facilities & Services, Caulfield.
What other jobs/industries did
you hold before landing here at Caulfield?
I completed my trade and tertiary qualifiactions during
my 20 year career in the Navy. I then made the transition into
Faciltites
Management with BHP Billiton before landing here at Monash.
What three great skills do you wish you had?
I'd like to spend my twilight years playing in a jazz band.
I'd like to be a wine maker
I'd like to be a better skier.
What is the best advice ever give to you and by whom?
My father always used to say that I'd realise he was right when I was
his age. now that I am, I realise he was right and I'm telling my son
exactly the same thing.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
My family and I went to Seaworld Nara late in 2002. Excellent family
holiday spot.
What hobbies/interests do you do in your spare time?
I keep fit by in-line skating, bike riding, snow skiing and chasing the
children. I like watching all codes of football, my playing days are
over.
What is your greatest extravagance?
A quiet seat in my back garden with a nice bottle of red
