Caulfield
campus remembers Sam Ly
Members
of the campus gathered on Friday 12 August to pay tribute to Sam Ly who
was killed in the London bombings in July. Mr. Ly's girlfriend of six
years, Ms. Mandy Ha, and Monash chaplain Reverend Peter Hoang opened the
memorial service with the lighting of a candle and the offering of
incense. Sam graduated from Monash in 2002 with a degree in
computing/banking and finance. He worked for Client Services in the
Information Technology Services division at Caulfield from 1993 to 2003.
Sam
was remembered fondly by former colleague George Lambiris " .... Sam was a
great friend and work colleague. He was always willing to help. His customer service and IT skills were exceptional, and his ability to
persist and diagnose complex problems was amazing."
Mandy
thanked the Monash community for its ongoing support. She said Sam's
family has been grateful for the amount of support they had received from
Monash. "I think Sam would have felt privileged to know he had
impacted on so many people's lives."

Open Day - Caulfield campus
Monash
Open Day - Caulfield campus was held on Sunday 7 August. Dark skies,
blustery winds and the occasional downpour didn't stop approximately 7,000
visitors to the campus on the day.

Large crowds gather in the Service
Centre ......

..... and Chisholm Hall
Once again, MONSU conducted its free
sausage sizzle/vegie burger bbq but held under the Walkway due to
inclement weather. Unfortunately, also due to the weather, the very
popular Chinese Lion Dance was cancelled.

The free bbq is always popular ....

..... as is Jugularity.
Tim Wilson did an outstanding job as the
roving MC, announcing upcoming events and activities and Jugularity did a
terrific job in entertaining the crowds throughout the day.

The student ambassadors also did a great
job under very windy and cold conditions.

Campus Nurse Report
Physically
active people need to eat carbohydrates for energy.
The amount of carbohydrate
you need depends on your age, body size and most importantly, your activity
level. However, it is recommended that carbohydrates should make up
55-65% of total kilojule intake.
Remember though, that as
body-stores of carbohydrate are easily depleted during exercise, you need to
top up these stores by eating carbohydrate foods regularly.

Do you
feel a spring in your step? Have you noticed that it is lighter in the
mornings? Yes, Spring is on its way and the Monash Community
Fitness Program for 2005 is packed full with opportunities to get together
with a friend and/or partner and join in on a group exercise adventure.
There is the running/walking Melbourne Marathon, the Around the Bay in a
Day, and the Portsea Swim classic. There is the weekly walking and running
group on a Tuesday. So, what is stopping you from making the best decision
in your life – to get moving and keep moving.
Fitness Tip
- Surround yourself with
supportive people.
- Decide what kind of
support you need: Do you want them to remind you to exercise? Ask about
your progress? Participate with you regularly or occasionally? Allow you
time to exercise by yourself? Go with you to a special event, such as a
10K walk/run? Be understanding when you get up early to exercise? Spend
time with the children while you exercise? Try not to ask you to change
your exercise routine?
- Share your activity time
with others.
- Make a date with a
family member, friend or co-worker.
- Be an active role model
for your children.
And above all, have fun
while keeping yourself as healthy as is possible.
Thanks from Judy Evans
(Campus/Practice Nurse)
