Sun Shines on Open Day
Tim Wilson, President of the Student Union did an outstanding job of roaming the campus, announcing activities and events and interviewing potential students throughout the day. Visitors to the campus were also treated to a free barbeque and entertained with a Chinese Lion Dance on the common lawn. General information areas were consolidated to three main areas this year, Chisholm Hall, Level 2, B Building and Art & Design.

Don Bradmore Retires
Don Bradmore Don began his teaching career as an English teacher in the public system and went on to gain a Master of Education at Melbourne University and a Master of Arts at Sydney University. He left teaching to take up a position in publishing and held senior positions including a role as National Sales and Marketing Manager with Prentice Hall of Australia (now Pearson Education, Australia). It was during his time with Prentice Hall that Don began his ongoing relationship with the work of Philip Kotler. Prentice Hall published Kotler’s books in Australia and Don was given the task of introducing this American with the weird name into Australian universities and educational institutions. One of the places he approached was the Caulfield Institute of Technology, which boasted the largest number of marketing educators in Australia. He also approached Monash University and it was staff from Monash University who co-authored the first Australian version of Kotler’s work. The outcome of those early contacts lead to Don taking up employment with CIT in 1987. Don taught subjects in Selling and Sales Management and wrote the text book for Issues in Competitive Advantage when he discovered that there wasn’t a book that adequately covered the subject. The subject for which Don will be most fondly remembered is Marketing Theory and Practice, which he taught using the latest versions of his beloved Kotler. Don’s abilities as a teacher extend from the large lecture theatre to the small tutorial room. With nothing more than a whiteboard and marker Don can hold a room of twenty students under his spell and teach them about the intricacies of the Boston Consulting Group matrix. In a lecture theatre with hundreds of students Don is also in complete command holding the interest of the students in a way that few others are able to do. He looks upon the electronics of the modern lecture theatre as gimmicks and while more than able in his use of Powerpoint etc. could teach quite happily without them. The rapport he has with his students is very special and more than one student has rearranged their whole timetable to go to Don’s lectures rather than those of another lecturer. Don spent the last two years before his official retirement teaching at the Malaysian campus of Monash University. He thoroughly enjoyed his time there and has many a good story to tell although it is probably the ones he doesn’t tell that are the most interesting. Don came back to Victoria to take up the life of a country squire, purchasing a small property just south of Bendigo where he intends to live in quiet retirement and perhaps buy a donkey. But full retirement has been postponed for a little while as Don works, part-time, as the unit co-ordinator for Marketing Theory and Practice for one more year. At a very special event on Thursday evening, 2 October, Don will reminisce about the people, events and circumstances that have shaped the Department of Marketing and will offer thought-provoking insights into the directions in which the University and the marketing discipline appear to be heading. Your invitation to attend is available at the following website: http://www.buseco.monash.edu.au/depts/mkt/t_l/sc_cal.php or by calling Lynda Cunningham on 03 9903 2151. If you know Don, you will not want to miss this event. Dietitian on Campus
