Walk the Talk - Sensational South Africa
The Healthy Breakfast held, on 21 September, also
provided an opportunity for us to celebrate the conclusion of the
latest Caulfield Campus 10,000 steps challenge - Walk the Talk -
Sensational South Africa. Eight teams of ten participants took
on the virtual four week walk around South Africa. The results
of this Challenge are as follows:
First Team to complete the challenge - Burning
Feet (Health, Wellbeing and Development)
Most Improved Team - Walkie Talkies (Service
Centre)
Most Active Individual - Sylvie Withers (Monash
Sport)
Most Improved Individual - Jill Modd (Service
Centre).
Certificates were also awarded to the highest
stepper in each of the eight teams.
It was very pleasing to see that all but one team
finished the challenge within the four week time limit.
The get ACCTIVE Group would also like to extend
thanks to Bianca Stuurman of Monash Sport for her assistance in
putting the virtual walk together.

Monash Goes Positive
Interest
in Positive Psychology is growing at Monash. We want to make
Monash THE most positive place where students and staff feel
connected and engaged and good about their experience here.
Following on from the exciting visit to Monash a few weeks ago of
Tal Ben Shahar, the most popular lecturer at Harvard University,
Jeff McLean in the Department of Management and Suzanne Wolf, of
Health, Wellbeing and Development, will host a weekly discussion
group on Positive Psychology. The focus of the group will be
informal discussion about concepts and strategies in Positive
Psychology and putting it into practice. The group will be
held on Tuesdays from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. in the Health, Wellbeing
and Development Meeting Room. (Building B, Level 1, Room B.154).
No need to book and all members of the campus community are very
welcome.
Monash Sport and Recreation for the Disabled
Monash Sport Caulfield is paving the way and developing programs for young
disabled adults to be integrated and be part of the main stream
culture of sports and fitness. Participants attend the Fitness
Centre weekly and participate in a 45 minute session that includes warm-up
stretches, low impact weight movement, gentle exercise and concludes
with seven minutes of relaxation. Feedback from participants
has been extremely positive and carers have also noted how much all
participants look forward to attending the campus for their weekly exercise class.
Monash Sport has recently signed up its first paid-up members with
disabilities - one
with autism and the other with a learning disability. Jeremy
O'Halloran, Manager of the Fitness Centre, together with other staff
have trained with the two members for six weeks, gradually building
up their confidence in using the equipment and becoming familiar
with their training program and also being in new surroundings,
which then improves their own self-confidence. Jeremy is also
pleased to report that feedback from the members' parents and
caregivers has been very positive and they have been well received
by other members of the Fitness Centre. It is hoped that
this program will be offered in the future to other community groups that provide
support for young disabled adults.

Caulfield Profiles
This month Michael Scorgie, Academic
Development Manager - Accounting & Finance and "Campus Treasure",
tells us a little about his life and his role here at Monash.
Michael was awarded "Campus Treasure" at the
end of 2006 for his contribution to the campus community for leading
the weekly walks when the Campus Nurse is not available and for
establishing the leisurely strolls and encouraging many members of
this department in participating in the 10,000 steps challenges.
Tell us a little about your professional
life ....
When Professor Donald Cochrane, Dean of the
Faculty of Economics and Politics was a Commissioner of the State
Savings Bank of Victoria, and I was a teller studying adult
matriculation, he was responsible for the creation of bursaries that
enabled selected bank officers to undergo full-time study at either
Melbourne or Monash University.
I was granted one of these bursaries and in 1962 entered the
Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Melbourne. I graduated
from Melbourne with a first class honours degree. In 1965 I returned
to the bank and considered opportunities to teach. I applied
for a number of positions and in September 1966 I was appointed to a
lectureship in accounting at Monash. I remained at Monash until 1970
when I resigned to take up a twelve month appointment at California
State University at San Diego, followed by a similar period at the
University of Lancaster. In 1973 I returned to Australia as a
lecturer in accounting at La Trobe University. Over more than thirty
years at La Trobe I held numerous positions including Head of the
Department of Accounting, and Associate Dean (International) in the
Faculty of Law and Management.
And your professional life here at Monash
......
My retirement from my academic position in June
2004 was curtailed soon after by invitations to do some part-time
administrative work at La Trobe and Monash. In December 2005 I was
appointed to the new position of Academic Development Manager in the
Department of Accounting and Finance. In this position I am required
to initiate and oversee academic developments that will enhance the
quality and concomitant reputation of the accounting and finance
courses.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy gardening, photography and walking
along a beach or path.
Do you have a favourite quote you would like
to share?
"All the world is queer save thee and me, and
even thou art a little queer". Robert Owen
Have you done much travelling? If so,
where was/is your favourite destination?
Malaysia: The position as Associate Dean
was coupled with that of Academic Director of La Trobe's Bachelor
degree program at Nilai International College in Malaysia.
