Equal Opportunity law, policy and process workshops

The University's Equity and Diversity Centre is running a number of Law, Policy and Process Workshops designed to give managers a better understanding of their obligations relating to equal opportunity.

Each workshop covers:

  • What does the legislation covering equal opportunity actually say?

  • How does the university translate this legislation into policy and practice?

By the end of the workshop participants will:

  • Be familiar with some important equal opportunity rights and responsibilities as covered by the law;

  • Be familiar with various Monash University EO policies and procedures;

  • Understand the meaning of harassment, discrimination and vilification;

  • Understand the University procedures for dealing with alleged incidents of harassment, discrimination or vilification;

  • Recognise the importance of key concepts of confidentiality, conciliation and natural justice.

The workshop is open to any member of staff interested in having a better understanding of their rights and responsibilities under the law.

A workshop will be held at Caulfield on 2 July from 10 am to 1 pm  in B4.57. However staff are also welcome to attend workshops at Clayton at any of the following times:

Caulfield moves

Malcom Bywaters, Gallery Manager in the Faculty of Art & Design, is leaving Monash at the end of this week.

Malcom will be taking up a new position in Launceston, Tasmania as the Academy Gallery Director, School of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Tasmania.

Malcom, who has been at Monash for six years, started as a lecturer in sculpture then in professional practice before becoming gallery manager.

As founding gallery manager at the campus, Malcom’s own expertise as an artist and experience in a freelance capacity has enabled the vision for the gallery – quality, educational exhibitions – to be achieved.

The campus wishes Malcom all the best for his new endeavour.

Longstanding Caulfield staff member Alan Simon has returned to the campus after a 14 month stint as Head of the School of Business and Economics at Monash South Africa.

Alan notes that the school is up and running, fully staffed and all subjects in the first two years of the Bachelor of Business and Commerce are being taught. Good progress has also been made towards the accreditation of the professional Accounting stream with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. Plans are also afoot for the introduction of the Monash MBA in Johannesburg in 2003.

Two major research projects in the areas of unemployment and e-commerce are being undertaken by two teams of staff members.

Alan says he is pleased to be back home on the campus he has served since June 1987.

The familiar faces of Joan Groves and Eileen Cieslak have temporarily been replaced by a large sheet of black plastic in A building. For those who can't put a face to the name you would no doubt recognise the voices at the other end of the switchboard.

Joan and Eileen's switchboard area and general information desk just outside the Clayfield room are currently being upgraded.

The most significant thing about their temporary move to ITS Client Services in F5.00 is that in the 25 years of working together, Joan and Eileen have never worked with other people before, and to be located with their  department colleagues "is a real buzz".

When the renovations are complete Joan and Eileen will move back to A1.36 to a flash new desk, terrific new office with space to move, and an area that will accommodate all of the PABX consoles and computer equipment that the job has accumulated over a period of many years.

Joan and Eileen in their temporary new home in F building. They will return to a revamped location in A building at the end of March.

While Mary Gordon from MONSEACS will be spending two days a week at Peninsula campus, other MONSEACS staff will be available to assist staff and students with their needs at Caulfield. Counsellor, Marie Dermott is available four days a week, and careers assistant Marian Longmire is full-time at Caulfield.

Are you or someone you know making a move this year either to a new job, a conference or through a collaborative venture? Please let Offcourse know.
