Health and safety opportunities at Caulfield

If you have a keen interest in OHS issues and wish to contribute to the health and safety of your work area, why not nominate for one of the Caulfield Campus Designated Work Group (DWG) Health and Safety Representative positions.

The DWG structure at the Caulfield Campus was recently redesigned to reflect the campus's organisational structure and accordingly several Health and Safety Representative positions have now become available.

To be eligible for nomination, staff must currently be on the Monash University payroll and must undertake at least some portion of their working duties in the relevant DWG. Staff may nominate themselves or be nominated for the position of health and safety representative. However, a nomination must be seconded by another staff member who is also on the Monash University payroll and who also undertakes some portion of their working duties in the relevant DWG.

As the key role of a health and safety representative is to represent the employees in a particular DWG, nominees should give consideration to the need to be available in the relevant DWG for the majority of the working week. The term of office for all health and safety representative positions will be to the 31 December 2004.

Staff wishing to nominate for the position of health and safety representative, can download a copy of the nomination form from the OHSE website.

Nominations must reach the Returning Officer, OHSE, Clayton by 12 noon on Wednesday, 27 February 2002. Withdrawal of nominations can be made up to 5 pm on Friday, 1 March 2002. A list of those elected unopposed will be published.

If more than one nomination is received for any DWG, an electoral roll and ballot papers will be developed. Nominees will then be invited to provide a statement in support of their nomination and the University will manage the distribution of ballot papers. The university will also manage the counting of votes and an election ballot will be held at 12 noon, Wednesday, 12 April 2002.

Enquiries can be directed to the Returning Officer, OHSE, Clayton on extn 51013.

Being water waste wise

Staff members at the Caulfield campus are being asked to be on the look out  for drips as part of the water saving initiatives introduced by the Facilities and Services Branch.

Normally for maintenance type issues such as dripping taps and water leaks, staff are required to put in a BEIMS remote request.

For this week only, in a concerted effort to eliminate all such water wastage on the campus, we are asking all staff to take a look around their own areas and nearby public areas and email the Works Manager direct with any information about leaking taps or other water wasting issues that you may come across.

This is a once week only and from then on the normal BEIMS remote request forms must be submitted.

Your co-operation in this water saving initiative is greatly appreciated and we hope to have a good response from all staff members on this campus. After Tuesday 19 February 2002 any repairs should be reported through the BEIMS system.

Out with the old and in with the new

Two lecture theatres in B building have received a substantial upgrade recently bringing them into line with other high tech facilities at the campus.

Prior to this work B2.15 still had a blackboard, however refurbishment
works commenced late last year involved the removal of the blackboard and the installation of a projection wall.

Works also included lighting upgrade and the installation of hi-tech teaching equipment. Works to both B2.14 and B2.15 included replacement of the old yellow plastic seats with a dual coloured fabric seat, re-lining and painting of the rear walls and replacement of the carpet.
