Mr Tim Costello AO (BJuris 1976, LLB 1978, DipEd 1979)
CEO, World Vision Australia
Distinguished Alumni Award 1999/2000 recipient

Tim Costello studied Law and Education at Monash University and is CEO of Australia's largest aid and development organisations, World Vision. He is a leading spokesperson on issues relating to Australia's response to global poverty. He also continues to speak publicly about issues relating to social justice, social inclusion and strengthening communities.

Mr Costello was ordained a Baptist Minister in 1986 and was elected as mayor of St Kilda in 1993. He was National President of the Baptist Union of Australia between 1999 and 2002. From 1995 to 2003 he was executive director of Urban Seed, a Christian not-for-profit organisation that provides outreach services and hospitality to the city's street people.

Mr Costello was appointed CEO of World Vision Australia in 2004. His media profile there adds weight to World Vision appeals such as that resulting from the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami, which raised more than $100 million.

Mr Costello is also currently Chairman of the National Australia Bank external stakeholder forum and a member of the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation.

Mr Costello has also written three books: Streets of Hope: Finding God in St Kilda, Tips from a Travelling Soul Searcher and Wanna Bet? Winners and Losers in Gambling's Luck Myth, co-written with Royce Millar.

In recognition of his work, he was a 2000 recipient of the Monash Distinguished Alumni Award and in 2005 he was made Officer of the Order of Australia.
