Ms Sue Howard (BA 1975)
Director of radio and regional content, Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Sue Howard has been director of radio at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) since 2000. Ms Howard has a long history of involvement in the radio industry, particularly at the ABC.

Following a three year stint as a secondary school teacher, Ms Howard commenced her career in broadcasting in the early 1980s, becoming producer/announcer at Adelaide radio station 5UV.

In 1986, Ms Howard joined the ABC as a presenter with ABC FM and Radio National, becoming the ABC’s first female breakfast presenter on 774 ABC Melbourne. In 1994, she was promoted to the position of manager of ABC Radio 3LO and regional radio. In 1996, she was appointed to head of ABC local and regional services where she was responsible for local programming on radio, television and online.

As director of radio, Ms Howard has been successful in broadening the appeal of ABC Radio to the under-55 age group as part of what is said to have been “one of the biggest cultural changes across the ABC radio network”.

Ms Howard is a member of the Bureau of Meteorology advisory board and belongs to Chief Executive Women, an organisation for female corporate leaders.
