Mr Simon Molesworth AM QC (BA 1975, LLB 1977)
Environmental lawyer
Distinguished Alumni Award 2005 recipient

Simon Molesworth is one of Australia's leading environmental lawyers. He is chairman of the International National Trust Organisation and non-executive chairman of Greenearth Energy Limited, a geothermal energy company.

From 1980 to 2005, Mr Molesworth was a councillor of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), having been its honorary chairman and then president for almost 20 years. Since 1988, he has been a board member of the Australian Council of National Trusts and its chairman from 2001 to 2006. Mr Molesworth is also a founding member of the Environment Institute of Australia, guiding its expansion into New Zealand in 2002 when it became the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand. He was the Institute's president from 1995 to 2005.

Mr Molesworth's interest in environmental law developed while undertaking a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws at Monash. Soon after graduating, Mr Molesworth founded and led Australia's first environmental law association - the Environmental Law Section of the Law Institute of Victoria.

In 1983, Mr Molesworth became the inaugural president of the National Environmental Law Association. A year later he was admitted to the Victorian Bar and took silk in 1995, specialising in environmental, planning, local government, heritage and natural resource law.

In addition to his environmental law commitments, Mr Molesworth is a long-term advocate for people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). As the former national chairman of the Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) CFS Association of Australia and current president of the ME/CFS Society of Victoria, he has campaigned to achieve better support services for people with the syndrome and more funding for research into the illness. In April 2006, Tattersall's recognised Mr Molesworth's work in this field by announcing him as the winner of the Tattersall's Award for Enterprise and Achievement. They acknowledged him as an "unsung hero in the community" for his work in the CFS area of health care.

In 1994, Mr Molesworth was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to the community in the field of conservation and the environment. In 2003, he received a United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Award for Outstanding Service to the environment. Monash University recognised Mr Molesworth's work by honouring him with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005.
