Dr Robert Hetzel (MBBS 1974)
CEO, Australian Red Cross Blood Service

Robert Hetzel is chief executive officer of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, a position he has held since 1996.

After receiving a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Monash University in 1974, Dr Hetzel went on to complete his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 1978.

Following a career in general medical practice, Dr Hetzel decided to change direction and completed a Masters in Business Administration at the University of Melbourne. He then moved into consultancy and management roles and spent five years as a principal consultant in organisational change at Clark Hummerston Organisation and Management Consultant Group. Following this, he became managing director of Monash IVF, where he was responsible for developing the organisation into a successful commercial enterprise.

From 1995-1996, Dr Hetzel was managing director of Leadership Partners, a business specialising in the assessment and development of leadership capabilities for senior executives.

In his role at the Australian Red Blood Service, Dr Hetzel has been responsible for implementing two long-term strategies to improve the Blood Service’s operations. These include strategies to establish a national structure, strengthen the Blood Service’s existing services and identify new development opportunities.

Dr Hetzel is also chair of the Global Advisory Panel on Corporate Governance and Risk Management for Blood Services in Red Cross Societies, a member of the Alliance of Blood Operators and inaugural chairman of Asia Pacific Blood Network.

Dr Hetzel is a Fellow of the Institute of Company Directors.
