Richard Alston is on the board of directors of UK public-listed company Chime Communications PLC and a member of the international advisory board of London-based hedge fund CQS.
He is an adjunct professor of IT at Bond University in Queensland, a director of the Melba Foundation which supports Australian classical artists and musicians, and a member of the Bell Shakespeare Foundation.
Mr Alston was most recently Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, a position he held from 2005 to 2008 following a notable political career in the Australian Parliament.
His first career was as a barrister, practising in common, commercial and administrative law.
Mr Alston’s Australian parliamentary career extended over 18 years. He was a Liberal Senator for Victoria from 1986 to 2004 and served as Deputy Leader in the Senate from 1993 to 2003. He was continuously on the front bench of Coalition parties for nearly 15 years.
In government, he was Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts from 1996 to 2003. In opposition, Mr Alston was responsible for a range of shadow portfolios including communications, the arts, social security, child care, superannuation and retirement incomes.
In addition to his Monash MBA and Master of Laws, Mr Alston holds Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from the University of Melbourne. |
