Paul McNamee is a sports administrator and former athlete.
Most recently, Mr McNamee was executive chairman of Australian Opens with Golf Australia (2006-2008) where he helped raise the profile of its national golf championships, particularly the Women's Australian Open.
Mr McNamee played tennis from an early age and showed promise throughout his teens. While completing a Bachelor of Science with majors in Statistics and Law at Monash University, he won a full blue for tennis in 1975.
Mr McNamee was soon a champion tennis player, becoming Australia's number one ranked player in 1985.
He was a renowned Davis Cup performer and a notable doubles champion in his pairing with Peter McNamara, netting them the 1980 and 1982 Wimbledon crowns.
Following his retirement from the professional tennis circuit, Mr McNamee worked to promote tennis in Australia through his role as president and chairman of Oz Tennis, as well as his significant efforts to make the Hopman Cup a popular event with the players and public alike. Formerly chief executive of the Australian Open (1999-2006), he has been the tournament director of the Hopman Cup since 1988.
In 1986, Mr McNamee was made Member of the Order of Australia, and in 1987 was awarded with the Warren Kennedy Memorial Award for Sportsmanship.
