Alumnus develops algorithm to improve Google searchesMay 2007
In 2006, while undertaking his PhD at the University of NSW, Mr Ori Allon (BComp 2002, MIT 2005) demonstrated the potential for improving web search engines by creating a new algorithm called Orion. His work has been recognised by Google who have acquired the rights to the algorithm. Google also employed Mr Allon as part of its Search Quality team. Mr Allon, originally from Israel, came to Australia to study at Monash University in 1999. Back then, he had no clue where his career was heading. What he did know, was that he found the internet to be an “amazing phenomenon” and was “curious to discover more about it”. “I chose Monash because it has an excellent reputation, especially in the field of information technology,” said Mr Allon. Now based in at Google’s headquarters in California in the US, Mr Allon’s main responsibility is to work with the Search Quality team to incorporate Orion into the search function. He will also develop other algorithms to produce the most accurate and relevant results for Google users. “The benefit of the Orion algorithm, in particular, is that users will find what they’re looking for quickly rather than having to scroll down a webpage to look for it,” said Mr Allon. Mr Allon’s advice to graduates who want to establish themselves in the IT industry is to invest in ‘machine learning’. In other words, to invest time in developing algorithms for machines that are able to learn and adjust to particular situations. He also advises alumni who have completed an undergraduate course to pursue postgraduate study to increase their chances of finding a challenging, senior job in the industry. Thankfully, there is hope of Mr Allon returning to Australia in the future, bringing a high level of talent and skill with him. “I would love to eventually return to Australia and perhaps launch my own company there. I loved living in Australia while studying,” he said. Link: Postgraduate study at Monash University’s Faculty of Information Technology |
