Ng Kah Ming

Malaysian born musician Dr Ng Kah Ming's rising popularity in Europe and America has, by association, propelled his country of birth into prominence on the world map.

A harpsichordist and conductor, involved in researching, directing and performing Baroque and Renaissance music, Dr Ng is also the course co-ordinator and lecturer in Early Music Studies at the Faculty of Music, Oxford University.

Dr Ng, who spent his childhood in Petaling Jaya, graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) in 1986. Dr Ng pursued his musical aspirations at the Frankfurt State Academy of Music, Germany in 1989 on a scholarship.

Two years later, with a scholarship from the British Council, Dr Ng moved to London's Guildhall School of Music & Drama for post-graduate studies where he became a winner of the Guildhall School's Early Music Competition and a Fellow (in harpsichord) of the Trinity College of Music, London.

He was then granted a Chevening award to read for an M.Phil. in performance and interpretation at St Anne's College, Oxford.

Later, at Keble College, Oxford, he gained his D.Phil. (equivalent to Oxford University's Ph.D.) for his doctoral research in basso continuo realisation.

Nevertheless, it was the music ensemble Charivari Agreable that has been Dr Ng's focus since 1993. His German wife Susanne Heinrich, and fellow music specialist Lynda Sayce from England are the two co-founders of his group.

The award-winning ensemble Charivari Agreable has just released its 11th CD, entitled 'Modus Phantasticus' on the Signum Records label. This recording of music by composers including Bach, Telemann, Pachelbel, Böhm, Funck and Schütz has recently been featured on Melbourne radio station 3MBS.

Touring to play at concerts and festivals has led Dr Ng to many parts of Europe and America. The last time he performed in Malaysia was in 2002 at the Alliance Française, Kuala Lumpur.
