Distinguished Alumni Service Award 2008

In nominating Mr John Sturdy, Mark Hillebrand (BBus(Mktg) 1988), former president of the Monash Alumni Association Incorporated, describes him as “a person of utmost integrity … [whose] primary focus was always long-term success and value derived by the Monash community.”

Mr Sturdy has developed, nurtured and participated in alumni, student and University-wide activities for almost 20 years. Mr Sturdy founded the Monash MBA Alumni Network and was an active committee member of the Monash Alumni Association Incorporated for more than ten years. He regularly volunteers his time to the Faculties of Engineering and Business and Economics, presenting talks to students and recent graduates and serving on the Civil Engineering Industry Advisory Committee and the Advisory Board of Monash Business Review. He has further contributed through his involvement in the successful submission by the Graduate School of Business for prestigious EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation.

In supporting the nomination, Associate Professor Gary Codner (DipEng 1969, BE 1971, MBA 1991) describes Mr Sturdy’s involvement with students and young alumni of the Faculty of Engineering: “John is an exceptional role model to students and graduates by setting a benchmark in enthusiasm and drive to achieve goals. He is a great example to young people. … He draws on his own development and background to show engineering students what can be achieved.”
