Voiceover: "David Mitchell graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2000.

"After completing his internship, Dr Mitchell served in the Royal Australian Air Force.

"While in East Timor he was the United Nations aero-medical evacuation doctor.

"In the aftermath of the Bali bombing, he was the only general practitioner in the medical evacuation team.

"He provided compassionate care in Cyprus and Lebanon while helping thousands of Lebanese Australians reach safety.

"In 2006, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners named him “GP Registrar of the Year”. He received the Australian Defence Force Medal in the same year.

"Monash University celebrates Dr Mitchell’s humanitarianism and his personal and professional service."

Dr Mitchell: "Coming to Monash and studying as a very young man in such a formative environment was an incredibly exciting time. But given all the exciting experiences I did have, by far the most memorable is meeting and marrying my wife. It's a little corny, but it's true.

"I always felt that the medical education I was getting was more than just about becoming the smartest and the best doctor I could be. It was about becoming the best doctor I could for my patients.

"Having been in a position to have a career that's taken me all over the world, when you tell people that you study at Monash University, they instantly know where you're talking about and they have that flicker of recognition.

"I'm incredibly honoured to be receiving this award but, more than that, I think I'm overwhelmingly humbled. Humbled that Monash, as an institution, has already given me so much in terms of an education and a career that I'm so passionate about and that I love, and that it would continue to recognise me in this way.

"I just hope in whatever endeavours I choose to be part of in the future, I continue to make Monash, as an institute, proud and continue to honour that name.
