Distinguished Alumni Award - 2003 recipient

Dato' Dr Jannie Tay (BSc 1968, MSc 1971)

Jannie Tay

'Take a positive approach, eliminate your self limiting-beliefs and regard your work with pleasure, not pressure' was the advice of prominent entrepreneur Jannie Tay to new graduates at a Faculty of Science graduation ceremony held in April.

Tay visited Monash to receive her Distinguished Alumni Award, which was announced late last year.

The founder and former Managing Director of The Hour Glass chain of upmarket watch stores, Tay was invited by Monash to receive the award 'for her outstanding achievements in business in Singapore and internationally, for her energetic advocacy for the advancement of women, and for her sustained contributions to community causes'.

Tay also presented an interactive Monash MBA Business Insights seminar during her visit, where she outlined the strategies The Hour Glass adopted in response to the Asian financial crisis, the principles she urges Hour Glass employees to adopt, and the qualities required of leaders.
