Mr Hugh Evans video

Voiceover: "Social movements campaigner Hugh Evans is director of The Global Poverty Project."

Hugh Evans: "If we are going to end extreme poverty we need to send a clear and unequivocal message that it’s not right that a child dies for lack of a 30 cent immunisation. It’s not right that 30,000 children still die every single day due to causes that can be prevented. If we send that message, I believe that we can also end extreme poverty in our lifetime."

Voiceover: "In 2002 he was World Vision’s inaugural Youth Ambassador.

"Mr Evans was named 'Young Australian of the Year 2004'. This honour recognised his founding of The Oaktree Foundation – a youth-run aid and development organisation."

Hugh Evans: "The Schools for Schools program is growing all throughout the world. And Oaktree has now gone on to provide more than 40,000 students with educational opportunities in six countries around the world."

Voiceover:"He is a passionate advocate for action to address poverty – and worked with fellow Monash student Dan Adams to lead the 'Make Poverty History' campaign and concert."

Hugh Evans: "Eventually we got all these amazing Australian artists involved. … all of a sudden I got a call from Bono’s management. And Bono’s like ‘hey guys I’m coming to Melbourne to perform at the Make Poverty History concert. Is that OK?’ I’m like was ‘Wow!’ It was like the worst kept secret in Australia’s history. It went on to become the largest ever youth run concert in the history of Australia and it was broadcast globally on CNN and BBC worldwide because it was the day before the G20 met in Melbourne.

"It sent a very clear message to our government. That was the whole purpose: to send a message to the Australian government that we should increase foreign aid to 0.7 per cent of gross national income, in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals."

Voiceover: "Graduating in 2008 with a Bachelor of Laws (with honours) and Bachelor of Science, Mr Evans is now studying a Masters of International Relations at Cambridge University.

"Monash University celebrates Mr Hugh Evans for his humanitarianism, his tenacity and his global vision."
