As 2002 draws to a close it is appropriate to reflect on an extraordinary year in the life of our
university.
It has been a year of change, with the departure of my predecessor; a year of great sadness, with the tragic shooting in October; a year of great achievements; and a year where the work of our scientists was discussed in great detail in the Australian Federal Parliament. This year, the first Monash vice-chancellor, Sir Louis Matheson, died; the Monash Centre in London opened; and one of our medical students, Geraldine Buckingham, was named Rhodes Scholar for Victoria.
The strength of the Monash community has been reinforced to me in my meetings with alumni both in and outside of Australia. Thank you for your compassion, resolve and commitment to the Monash family. I hope that you will be able to spend time with those who matter most to you over the New Year season and that you are able to look forward to a happy 2003.
Peter Darvall
Vice-chancellor
Please note that the Alumni Relations office will close on Friday 20
December and will reopen on Thursday 2 January 2003.
