Professor Richard
Larkins AO has accepted Monash University Council's invitation to be
the university's next Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Larkins will commence on 1 September 2003, succeeding
current Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Darvall, who is retiring.
Professor Larkins has been Dean of the Faculty of Medicine,
Dentistry and Health Sciences, at the University of Melbourne since
1998 and has had a distinguished career in scientific research and
academic management.
He was chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council of
Australia from 1997-2000, president of the Royal Australasian
College of Physicians from 2000-2002, a member of the Prime
Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council from
1997-2000 and a member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Health Council from 1997-2000. He was appointed an Officer
in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2002.
Monash Chancellor Mr Jerry Ellis said Professor Larkins would
continue the significant advances in research and teaching Monash
was making in its substantial operations in Victoria and around the
globe.
"Monash has set a determined path to be one of the world's
leading universities," Mr Ellis said.
"With the appointment of an academic leader of the calibre of
Professor Larkins, Monash can be assured that it will remain focused
on innovation, internationalisation and engagement well into the
future."
Retiring Vice-Chancellor Professor Darvall said he was looking
forward to welcoming Professor Larkins to Monash. The two will meet
in the near future to discuss a smooth and energetic leadership
transition for the university.
