1.1 COMMONWEALTH GAMES SUCCESS FOR MONASH COMMUNITY

Monash graduates, staff and students have made a strong contribution to the success of the Australian team at the recent Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

1.2 VALE KENNETH HENDERSON HUNT

Emeritus Professor Kenneth Hunt, the foundation dean of the Faculty of Engineering, passed away recently after an illness. Professor Hunt led the Faculty of Engineering with distinction through its formative years from 1960, overseeing the establishment and expansion of the Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering departments. Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Darvall said Professor Hunt was known for his charm, wit and love of music, as well as for his outstanding leadership of the Faculty of Engineering.

2.2 MBA ALUMNI NETWORKING SEMINAR: THE STEM CELL DILEMMA

Melbourne, 2 September.
How does Australia answer the social and economic dilemmas of investing in leading-edge bioscience such as stem cells? Robert Klupacs CEO of ES Cell International, a Melbourne-based regenerative medicine venture utilising human embryonic stem cells, will challenge some established views about bioscience investment and argue why it is a national imperative. ALUMNI NEWS

3.1 JULIAN SAVULESCU TO TAKE UP CHAIR IN APPLIED ETHICS AT OXFORD UNIVERSITY

Julian Savulescu (BMedSc 88, MB BS 88, PhD 95) has been named as the first Uehiro professor of applied ethics at Oxford University. Professor Savulescu is best known for his work regarding ethics and genetics/new technology, especially stem cells and cloning. Professor Savulescu says that during his time at Oxford, he aims to promote "the highest level of scholarship in applied ethics, to affect people's practices for the better".

3.2 VICTORIA FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENTS

Dr Gary Rosengarten (BSc (Hons) 92, BE (w/hons) 1994) and Dr Cindy Yap (BA 96, BSc (Hons) 97) have been awarded Victoria Fellowships. The fellowships, which take the form of travel grants of up to $15,000, recognise emerging innovators in science, technology and engineering early in their careers.
Gary is a research fellow in the Faculty of Engineering at RMIT, working in nanotechnology. Cindy received her award for her role in identifying an enzyme that is largely responsible for the abnormal blood clotting that underlies heart attack and stroke.

3.3 MONASH CIVIL ENGINEERING ALUMNUS 2002

Mr Richard Cugley (BE w/hons 73, MEngSc 81), currently employed by Maunsell Australia, is the recipient of the 2002 Monash Civil Engineering Alumnus Award. The award recognises an alumnus of the Department of Civil Engineering who has made a significant contribution to the engineering profession and the community. The award will be presented at the annual Civil Engineering Alumni and Guest Lecturer's Dinner, to be held at the Monash University Club at 7 pm on Thursday 17 October. 3.4 ENGINEER ELECTED TO ACADEMY OF SCIENCE

The research achievements of Professor Tam Sridhar, head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Monash alumnus (PhD 78), have been acknowledged with his election to the Australian Academy of Science.

5.2 MENTORING PROGRAM - MONASH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION INC.

Need some professional support or guidance? Be mentored by a Monash alumnus who will be carefully matched with you and who can support your growth and development over a period of 12 months. The MAAI Mentoring Program is a new initiative from the Monash Alumni Association Inc. There are no fees but you must be a member of the MAAI, an independent alumni association ($55 to join). 5.3 DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS

Postgraduate Enhancement Scholarship - $27,000 pa (tax free)
Departmental Scholarship - $17,609-$25,000 pa (tax free)
Applications are invited from graduates wishing to expand their horizons and career opportunities by undertaking postgraduate study for the MEngSci or PhD degrees by research. We are seeking recent graduates from engineering or physical/biological science with H1 or HIIA honours equivalence and graduates with two years of industrial experience in a related field and who have HIIA honours equivalence. Closing date for applications is 30 September 2002.
