NEWS FROM MONASH1.1 XENOGRAFTING SUCCESS BRINGS NEW HOPE FOR ANIMAL CONSERVATIONEndangered species have been given new hope for survival following Monash University research that shows an animal's ovarian tissue grafted onto tissues in another species can produce healthy live young. 1.2 SYNCHROTRON SITE AT MONASHThe Victorian Government will build Australia's first synchrotron facility at Monash University's Clayton campus in Melbourne. Synchrotrons are used for groundbreaking industrial and scientific research, including new drugs and vaccines, computer chips and environmental science. EVENTS2.1 CHRIS SILAGY MASTER CLASS SERIESThe late Professor Chris Silagy AO (PhD Med) was a strong advocate of the need for greater leadership and innovation in healthcare. 'Pushing the Envelope in Primary Care' is the first in an annual series of master classes and will be of particular interest to general practitioners, academics and policy makers. 2.2 LAW SEMINAR & NETWORKING IN SINGAPORE AND KUALA LUMPURMonash Law presents a seminar, 'Jurisdiction & Justice: Challenges in Cyberspace', which will investigate current developments in relation to on-line commerce jurisdiction. 2.3 LAW ALUMNI 2002 ETHICS & SOCIAL JUSTICE LECTUREMonash Law Alumni Advisory Group presents 'Decision Making in a Vacuum?', a lecture to be given by Justice Ray Finkelstein. 2.4 PHARMACY REUNION DINNERGraduates from 1970-72 are invited to a reunion dinner at the College to be 2.5 MONASH UNIVERSITY MUSEUM OF ART, SPECIAL EXHIBITION'People, places + ideas - a celebration of 40 years of collecting' ALUMNI NEWS3.1 ANDREW MOHL APPOINTED NEW AMP CHIEF EXECUTIVEMonash alumnus Mr Andrew Mohl (BEc(Hons) 1977) is the newly appointed chief executive of AMP, a leading international financial services company. Mr Mohl joined AMP in 1996 and is currently living in Sydney. His former employers include Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Reserve Bank of Australia and ANZ Banking Group. 3.2 IAN MACFARLANE NAMED CENTRAL BANK GOVERNOR OF THE YEARMonash alumnus Mr Ian Macfarlane (BEc(Hons) 1968, MEc 1971), currently the Reserve Bank of Australia's chief, has been named central bank governor of the year by Euromoney, a journal of the world's capital and money markets. In the September edition interview, Mr Macfarlane attributes his success to foresight, commitment to the 'timetable', and some luck. Mr Macfarlane received the 1996 Monash Distinguished Alumnus Award. 3.3 VALE DR TIM MCARDLEDr Tim McArdle (MBBS 1980), a Warragul general practitioner, was tragically killed in a cycling accident on 11 September. Dr McArdle was a much loved and respected country GP and will be remembered for his mentoring of Monash medical students and his involvement with community groups. 3.4 MONASH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SINGAPORE, ANNUAL DINNER AND DANCEThe Monash Alumni Association Singapore held its annual dinner and dance on 31 August at The Hilton Hotel, Singapore. The dinner was preceded by the association's AGM, at which Dr Lim Shun Ping (MBBS (with hons) 1970, PhD Med 1982) was elected president. Visit the website for event pictures and to download the speech by alumnus and guest of honour, Mr Teo Ming Kian (BE 1975), Chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board. 3.5 MONASH MALAYSIA GRADUATIONSIn September the Monash Malaysia campus held its second round of graduations for students who completed degrees entirely on the Malaysia campus. This group included the first ever Monash Malaysia graduates in Engineering and Communications. More than 700 graduating students, family members and alumni attended a celebratory dinner to mark this occasion. OPINION4.1 AUSTRALIA AND THE WAR ON TERRORISM: ONE YEAR ON, DR DAVID WRIGHT-NEVILLEThe tragic events of one year ago provided Australia with an opportunity to make a genuine contribution to countering the threat of mass murder through terrorism. Sadly, the opportunity now appears lost. We could have focused on how Australia might help slow this violence by interrupting the mixture of cultural, economic and political frustrations that drove those nineteen young men to perpetrate those obscene acts of violence.
