1.1 MONASH AND IOC COMBINE ON OLYMPIC GAMES KNOW-HOW
The knowledge gained from running an Olympic Games will now be
transferred from Games to Games and shared among the world's sporting
bodies in an initiative launched last month in Salt Lake City at the

1.2 SYNCHROTRON PROFESSOR APPOINTED
A prominent physicist from the UK has been recruited to play a leading
role in the development of the Australian Synchrotron at Monash.
Professor Robert Lewis, currently an instrumentation physicist at a
synchrotron at the Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire, England, will take
up the Chair of X-Ray and Synchrotron Physics in the School of Physics

1.3 RARE DONKEY BORN THROUGH EMBRYO TRANSFER
Monash University reproductive research is helping save the world's most
endangered donkey breed. In a world first, a rare Poitou donkey foal has
been born to a surrogate standard-bred horse after embryo transfer. For

1.4 MONASH CARS OF THE FUTURE COME TO THE MELBOURNE MOTOR SHOW
Twelve futuristic model vehicles designed by Monash University students
will go on show for the first time at the Melbourne Motor Show this
week. Monash's Faculty of Art and Design was the only non-commercial
vendor to be offered a place at the Motor Show this year. The 12-day
event is expected to attract more than 250,000 visitors. For more

Monash's performing arts students present 'Sunday in the Park with

2.2 WORKSHOP AND LUNCH, EXPRESSIONS OF INDIAN ART AND CULTURE
The purpose of the workshop and lunch is to encourage Australian
scholars to talk about their research and exchange ideas. It will take
place between 10 am and 3 pm, on Fri Mar 15 at the Monash Asia

2.3 UNVEILING OF BUST OF PROFESSOR ERIC GLASGOW
The official unveiling of the bronze bust of Professor Eric Ferguson
Glasgow will take place at 6 pm on Wed Mar 27 in the Anatomy
Courtyard, building 13C on the Clayton campus. Alumni, staff and former
colleagues of Professor Glasgow are invited to attend. For further

2.4 PHARMACY ALUMNI CRICKET MATCH
Interested players and spectators are invited to participate in a
cricket match between the Victorian College of Pharmacy/Pharmaceutical
Society of Australia (Victorian branch), and the Sydney University
Pharmacy Alumni Association. The match will be played in Bowral, NSW,
on
the weekend of April 27-28. A practice match is planned for Sun Mar 24.

2.5 INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC STUDIES CONFERENCE
The Faculty of Law's International Institute of Forensic Studies will
hold its inaugural conference examining the presentation of expert
opinion evidence, at Prato, Italy, in July. The aim of the conference
is
to provide a forum for legal and other professionals who give evidence
in courts and tribunals, to explore and develop better ways of utilizing

2.6 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES INTERNATIONAL ALUMNI CONVENTION (AUIAC)
An exciting program of speakers and networking opportunities is
currently being put together by the 2002 AUIAC conference organising
committee, led by former senator and current Monash professor John
Button. It will take place on Sept 5-7 in Melbourne. The convention

2.7 2003 INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CONFERENCE
The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences has rescheduled
its international medical conference, 'The New World of Medicine', to
run from May 6-10 2003 at the university's learning centre in Prato,

3.1 MONASH LEADER FOR ROTARY HONG KONG
Having an active business and family life and being a member of the
Monash University Alumni Association of Hong Kong are apparently no
deterrent to extra-curricular achievement for Monash engineering
graduate Grace Yen. Grace, currently president of the Rotary Club of
Hong Kong Harbour, led three fundraising projects last year, raising
HKD400,000, HKD300,000 of which was donated to a school project in

3.2 SCIENCE GRADUATE APPOINTED HEAD OF US ARTIFICIAL BRAIN PROJECT
Associate Professor Hugo de Garis was recently appointed Head of Utah
State University's (USU) Artificial Brain Project. In his role of
developing more sophisticated brain building machines, Associate
Professor Hugo de Garis aims to create a new generation of
brain building machine, and its corresponding artificial brain,
approximately every 5 years for the next 20 years. He also teaches the
world's only university lecture course on brain building at USU. For

OPINION
4.1 OPINION: PAKISTAN - THE QUESTION OF THE RIGHTEOUS MILITARY?
Pakistan remains possibly the least understood Asian country in the
West. This is especially true of Australia, whose government condemned
the military takeover led by General Pervaiz Mucharraf. The fact that
it
was a relatively popular event and came after years of deep
disillusionment with Pakistan's democratic experiment has largely been

5.2 MONASH MALAYSIA: BUSINESS ENGLISH AND EFFECTIVE SPEAKING SKILLS
Monash University Malaysia, through its Professional Development
Service, will be organising a seminar on Business English and Effective
Speaking Skills, from Mar 19-20. The facilitators for the two-day
workshop are Dr Eric Wong, senior lecturer and head of Language and
Learning Support Unit, Monash University Malaysia, and P. Koshy George,

5.4 PELS APPLICATIONS CLOSE MAR 28
The introduction of the national Postgraduate Education Loan Scheme
(PELS) makes it even easier to access postgraduate study at Monash. The
PELS scheme provides an interest-free loan facility for eligible
Australian citizens and permanent residents who commence fee-paying
postgraduate coursework award programs from Jan 1 2002. PELS

6.1 VICTORIA PRIZE AND SCHOLARSHIPS
To celebrate the excellence of Victoria's world-class science,
technology and engineering, the Victorian Government awards the
prestigious Victoria Prize of $50,000. Six Victorian Fellowship overseas
study grants of $15,000 each are also awarded to encourage the
innovation and R&D excellence of emerging researchers. Nominations
