Research Institute and the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research
and Public Health to form one of the largest and most advanced medical
research facilities in Australia. For more information, see 1.3 WHITLAM VISITS MONASH CENTRE IN PRATOFormer prime minister Mr Gough Whitlam paid a visit to the Monash Centre
in Prato last month at the invitation of centre director Professor Bill
Kent. Accompanied by his wife Margaret, Mr Whitlam met visiting Monash
students from the faculties of Art and Design and Law and gave an impromptu
talk in the centre's salone, highlighting a number of important contemporary
Australian political and constitutional issues. For more information,
see 1.4 MONASH INDIA FOCUS GROUP LAUNCHEDIndian High Commissioner Mr Rajendra Singh Rathore launched the new Monash
India Focus Group at a dinner held recently at the Clayton campus. Mr
Rathore said the establishment of the Monash India Focus Group was an
example of the strong links that were being forged between EVENTS2.1 LONDON CENTRE OPENING EVENTSTo mark the official opening of the Monash University Centre in London
this July, there will be a month-long series of events, seminars and conferences
showcasing the scope of activities at Monash, from world leading stem-cell
research, to understanding how business works in Asia. 2.2 INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC STUDIES CONFERENCEThe Faculty of Law's International Institute of Forensic Studies will hold its inaugural conference examining the presentation of expert opinion evidence at the Monash Centre in Prato, Italy, on 2-5 July. The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for legal and other professionals who give evidence in courts and tribunals and to explore and develop better ways of utilising expertise. studies and research opportunities in Engineering at Monash University.
The session will be conducted by Professor Carlos Tiu, Assoc. Dean, International,
Faculty of Engineering. General information about postgraduate studies
at Monash will also be available. Alexander Theatre in July, with special discounts for Monash Alumni. 2.6 MONASH GOVERNANCE RESEARCH UNIT LAUNCH/LECTUREThe Monash Governance Research Unit (MGRU) has been established to promote research on the interconnection, interdependence and interaction among three major spheres of governance: corporate governance, public governance and civil society. The Inaugural MGRU lecture and formal launch of the unit will be conducted from 6.30 pm, 16 July, at Parliament House, Melbourne, with guest speaker David Knott and MC Ken Coghill. Dress: Black tie. Alumni Awards. Following consideration of nominations received during
2001, Monash University has awarded 3.2 MONASH ALUMNA WINS DOBELL ART PRIZEMonash Alumna and fine arts lecturer Ms Mary Tonkin has been awarded
the $10,000 national Dobell Prize for Drawing. Ms Tonkin, a BA graduate
who will complete a Masters of Fine Art this year, won the prize for her
work, Rocky Outcrop, Werribee Gorge. One of Australia's most prestigious
art prizes, the Dobell Prize for Drawing is awarded simultaneously with

see 3.4 IT GRADUATE WINS 2002 PEARCEY AWARDJonathan Zufi (BComp(Hons) 1994) is the winner of the 2002 Victorian Pearcey Award for Young Achievers. A self-confessed "propeller-head", 31 year old Zufi was acknowledged by the selection panel as a young achiever with an adventurous spirit who has taken risks to get his IT company off the ground.
