1.1 MONASH RESEARCHERS DISCOVER IMMUNE SYSTEM STEM CELLS IN WORLD FIRST

1.2 NEW MEDICAL RESEARCH FACILITY TO BOOST RESEARCH AND EDUCATION 

Monash University has joined with The Alfred Hospital, the Baker Heart Research Institute and the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health to form one of the largest and most advanced medical research facilities in Australia. For more information, see

1.3 WHITLAM VISITS MONASH CENTRE IN PRATO

Former prime minister Mr Gough Whitlam paid a visit to the Monash Centre in Prato last month at the invitation of centre director Professor Bill Kent. Accompanied by his wife Margaret, Mr Whitlam met visiting Monash students from the faculties of Art and Design and Law and gave an impromptu talk in the centre's salone, highlighting a number of important contemporary Australian political and constitutional issues. 1.4 MONASH INDIA FOCUS GROUP LAUNCHED

Indian High Commissioner Mr Rajendra Singh Rathore launched the new Monash India Focus Group at a dinner held recently at the Clayton campus. Mr Rathore said the establishment of the Monash India Focus Group was an example of the strong links that were being forged between

EVENTS

2.1 LONDON CENTRE OPENING EVENTS

To mark the official opening of the Monash University Centre in London this July, there will be a month-long series of events, seminars and conferences showcasing the scope of activities at Monash, from world leading stem-cell research, to understanding how business works in Asia.

2.2 INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC STUDIES CONFERENCE

The Faculty of Law's International Institute of Forensic Studies will hold its inaugural conference examining the presentation of expert opinion evidence at the Monash Centre in Prato, Italy, on 2-5 July. The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for legal and other professionals who give evidence in courts and tribunals and to explore and develop better ways of utilising expertise. 2.3 POSTGRADUATE STUDIES AT MONASH INFORMATION SESSION

Graduates are invited to attend an information session on postgraduate studies and research opportunities in Engineering at Monash University. The session will be conducted by Professor Carlos Tiu, Assoc. Dean, International, Faculty of Engineering. General information about postgraduate studies at Monash will also be available. On July 6, 10 am - 12 noon.

2.4 LAW ALUMNI COCKTAIL RECEPTION

2.5 MONASH UNIVERSITY PERFORMING ARTS SEASON

Monash University Performing Arts is presenting two productions at the Alexander Theatre in July, with special discounts for Monash Alumni.

2.6 MONASH GOVERNANCE RESEARCH UNIT LAUNCH/LECTURE

The Monash Governance Research Unit (MGRU) has been established to promote research on the interconnection, interdependence and interaction among three major spheres of governance: corporate governance, public governance and civil society. The Inaugural MGRU lecture and formal launch of the unit will be conducted from 6.30 pm, 16 July, at Parliament House, Melbourne, with guest speaker David Knott and MC Ken Coghill. Dress: Black tie. 3.1 MONASH UNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Outstanding professional achievements, inspirational leadership and exceptional human qualities characterise recipients of Monash University's Distinguished Alumni Awards. Following consideration of nominations received during 2001, Monash University has awarded 
Distinguished Alumni Awards to three alumni:

3.2 MONASH ALUMNA WINS DOBELL ART PRIZE

Monash Alumna and fine arts lecturer Ms Mary Tonkin has been awarded the $10,000 national Dobell Prize for Drawing. Ms Tonkin, a BA graduate who will complete a Masters of Fine Art this year, won the prize for her work, Rocky Outcrop, Werribee Gorge. One of Australia's most prestigious art prizes, the Dobell Prize for Drawing is awarded simultaneously with the Archibald, Wynne and Sultan prizes. For more information, see

3.3 2002 QUEENS BIRTHDAY HONORS LIST

3.4 IT GRADUATE WINS 2002 PEARCEY AWARD

Jonathan Zufi (BComp(Hons) 1994) is the winner of the 2002 Victorian Pearcey Award for Young Achievers. A self-confessed "propeller-head", 31 year old Zufi was acknowledged by the selection panel as a young achiever with an adventurous spirit who has taken risks to get his IT company off the ground. 3.5 SHOBA PURUSHOTHAMAN: FROM ARTS GRADUATE TO MEDIA ENTREPRENEUR

Shoba Purushothaman, 1985 arts graduate, is the co-founder and CEO of The NewsMarket, the world's first web based PR distribution channel to deliver broadcast quality video to journalists around the world. Last year Shoba was one of 23 leading young female entrepreneurs selected to

3.6 SYDNEY UNIVERSITY APPOINTS MONASH GRADUATE AS DEAN OF LAW

Monash graduate, Professor Ron McCallum, BJuris 1970, LLB(Hons) 1972 has been appointed as Dean of Law at Sydney University. Professor McCallum is internationally renowned as one of the world's foremost scholars of labour law. He is the foundation Blake Dawson Waldron
Professor in Industrial Law at Sydney University, where he teaches labour law and litigation at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has also taught labour law at the Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Ontario, at Duke University, North Carolina and at the University of Lavalin Quebec City. Monash University congratulates him on his latest appointment.

5.1 EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE BY DISTANCE EDUCATION

This course explores the history, concepts, collection and implementation of evidence-based medicine. The four subjects offered can either be done independently or with teacher assessment as part of the Graduate Certificate in Evidence-Based Practice through Monash University.
