1.1 COUNCIL APPOINTS NEW VICE-CHANCELLOR
Monash University Council has appointed Professor Peter Darvall as vice-chancellor

1.2 MONASH UNIVERSITY SHARES IN INFRASTRUCTURE GRANTS WORTH $40M
Monash University is delighted to be a partner in 10 of the 16 consortia
that have been awarded Science, Technology and Innovation Infrastructure
grants by Victorian Minister for Innovation John Brumby. The grants will
be used to build world-class facilities that will enhance Victoria's involvement
in nanotechnology, materials manufacturing, drug and vaccine development,
oral health and mathematical sciences.

1.3 STEP FORWARD IN UNDERSTANDING OF PROSTATE DISEASE
Changing ratios of hormones could be responsible for initial abnormal
changes in prostate growth, a Monash University PhD researcher has found.
The findings are an important step forward in understanding the elements
that cause changes in the growth of the prostate and how such changes
could lead to the development of prostate cancer.

Investor meets inventor - Breakfast with Nicholas Mathiou.
Monash alumnus Nicholas Mathiou (MMktg 1997) will discuss the challenges
facing innovative Australian companies. His wealth of financial and commercial
experience includes public and private fundraising, valuations, acquisitions
and divestments, due diligence reviews and investments.

2.2 MONASH ALUMNI ASSOC. SINGAPORE AGM AND DINNER
The Monash Alumni Association Singapore will hold its Annual General
Meeting and Annual Dinner on 31 August at The Hilton Hotel, 581 Orchard
Road Singapore. Cocktails 7 pm, dinner 7.30 pm. Cost: $35 members/$45

2.3 INTERNATIONAL APPLICATION DAY
International Application Day will be held on Saturday 31 August at the
Monash University International Centre, Clayton campus, from 10 am to
4 pm. International Application Day is for international students who
want to study at Monash and who are currently living in Australia. Students
can obtain information about faculties, campuses, courses and more. If
students apply on the day, Monash will waive the A$50 application fee.

2.4 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES INTERNATIONAL ALUMNI CONVENTION (AUIAC)
Alumni are invited to renew old friendships and establish new contacts
for 'Networking in the Knowledge Economy' - the theme of the 2002 AUIAC.
The convention brings together a vibrant network of Australian university
graduates linked by a common interest in professional and personal development,
community development, commerce and education. To be held from 5 to 7

2.5 NETWORKING EVENT FOR AUIAC DELEGATES

2.6 DINNER FOR 60s AND 70s GRADUATES
Kuala Lumpur - 18 September, Monash graduates from the 1960s and 1970s,
along with Monash MBA graduates, are invited to join the pre-graduation
dinner for the second graduating class of Monash University Malaysia.
New Monash vice-chancellor Professor Peter Darvall will be in attendance.

3.1 MONASH GRADUATE APPOINTED JUDGE OF THE SUPREME COURT
Julie Dodds-Streeton (MA in Women's Studies 1995) has been named a judge
of the Supreme Court of Victoria. One of two barristers nominated by Victorian
Attorney-General Rob Hulls to move to the Supreme Court bench, Julie Dodds-Streeton,
SC, is the first woman to be appointed to the bench by the Bracks Government.
She has been involved primarily in company and commercial law as a barrister
for 14 years. A former senior law lecturer at the University of Melbourne,
she acted as counsel assisting the Ansett administrators.
3.2 HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM FOR AUSAID PROJECT IN SAMOA
Tony Lawson (BEc 1973, LLB 1979) and Hazel Lawson (nee Hazel Ann Carr)
(BA 1970, DipEd 1971) are helping develop the skills of young people in
Samoa through an AusAid project. As Parliamentary Counsel working with
the Samoan Attorney General, Tony Lawson is responsible for the Samoan
Government's legislative program and the training of young Samoan lawyers
in drafting legislation. Hazel Lawson is the Samoan in-country manager
for the Australian Youth Ambassadors For Development Program. The scheme
places young Australians with professional, technical and trade skills
in developing countries for up to 12 months. Tony writes to the Monash
alumni office, "We are having a wonderful time in an extraordinary
country and hope that we can leave something of benefit and value."

OPINION
4.1 PAID MATERNITY LEAVE - CAN WE BEAR THE PAIN?
Australia is one of only two OECD countries that do not provide a national
paid maternity leave scheme and the government is under mounting pressure
to offer one. Monash academic Dr Anne Bardoel outlines why Australia needs
such a scheme and who should pay.
