1.1 VALE SIR LOUIS MATHESON - VICE CHANCELLOR 1960-76
Monash University has paid tribute to its foundation Vice-Chancellor,
Sir Louis Matheson, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday 27 March.
Sir James Adam Louis Matheson was Vice Chancellor of Monash University
from its beginnings in 1960 until 1976. Under Sir Louis Matheson, Monash
University underwent 16 years of remarkable growth. The present
Vice-Chancellor of Monash University, Professor David Robinson, said Sir
Louis Matheson had made a major contribution to the development of
higher education in Australia. For more information, see

1.2 DEATH RATE LOWER IN IVF PATIENTS: RESEARCH
Australian women who undergo IVF treatment have a lower death rate than
other women the same age, according to new Monash University research.
The Monash research team investigated outcomes for nearly 30,000 women
who had been referred to IVF clinics throughout Australia before 1994.

1.3 NEW CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING HOPE
Monash University researchers are testing a new device with the
potential to revolutionise screening for cervical cancer. The device,
which was developed by Australian company Optiscan Pty Ltd, is a probe
about the size of a ballpoint pen that enables high magnification of
intact living tissue. For more information, see

1.4 MONASH MALAYSIA'S BUSINESS STUDENTS AMONG SELECTED INTERNS
Like any good friends, Jennifer Lee, Jolene Choo and Verena Chua like
doing things together to the extent that they even applied for the same
internship program with a leading international accounting firm. And
it turns out that all three, who are from Monash University Malaysia,
were accepted into the vacation program at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

1.5 LAW EXPERTS HELP DEVELOPING COUNTRIES EXPAND e-TRADE
Monash's e-commerce law experts visited Vietnam recently in a bid to
help developing economies take advantage of expanding trade
opportunities in the APEC region. Representatives of the university's
Centre for Law in the Digital Economy visited Hanoi, where they
conducted an e-commerce Legal Infrastructure Workshop. For more

2.3 PHARMACY ALUMNI CRICKET MATCH
Interested players and spectators are invited to participate in a
cricket match between the Victorian College of Pharmacy/Pharmaceutical
Society of Australia (Victorian branch), and the Sydney University
Pharmacy Alumni Association. The match will be played in Bowral, NSW,
on

2.5 LEADING IDEAS FORUM, TAN SRI DR N SOPHIEE, THE ECONOMY
Distinguished commentator Tan Sri Dr Noordin Sophiee will deliver a

2.7 INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC STUDIES CONFERENCE
The Faculty of Law's International Institute of Forensic Studies will
hold its inaugural conference examining the presentation of expert
opinion evidence, at the Monash University Centre Prato, Italy, in July.
The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for legal and other
professionals who give evidence in courts and tribunals, to explore and
develop better ways of utilizing expertise. For more information,

2.8 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES INTERNATIONAL ALUMNI CONVENTION (AUIAC)
An exciting program of speakers and networking opportunities is
currently being put together by the 2002 AUIAC conference organising
committee, led by former senator and current Monash professor John

2.9 2003 INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CONFERENCE
The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences has rescheduled
its international medical conference, 'The New World of Medicine', to

3.1 CELEBRATING GIPPSLAND'S HISTORY: MONASH GIPPSLAND'S MARCH REUNION
Graduates and former staff last weekend celebrated the first reunion
of
Monash's Gippsland campus to commemorate the three stages in the
campus's history. The reunion, which was attended by almost 400 people,
celebrated the history of Yallourn Technical College from 1928 to 1968,
Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education from 1968 to 1990 and Monash
University from 1990 till the present. For more information, see

3.2 STELARC GIVEN FACULTY'S FIRST HONORARY DOCTORATE
The Faculty of Art and Design at Monash awarded its first honorary
doctorate to performance artist Stelarc last month. Born Stelios
Arcadiou in Cyprus, Greece, in 1946, the artist has achieved a high
level of international recognition in the field of conceptual,
performance and body art. Stelarc, who trained at the former Caulfield
Technical College, an antecedent of Monash, will return to Monash as
artist-in-residence in June. For more information, see

4.1 OPINION: TEACHING: THE WAY FORWARD
After years in the wilderness, the status of teaching and the state of
education is now back on the national agenda. But to improve the quality
of our education system and maintain renewed interest in the profession,
there must be an increase in the number of teacher training places,

6.1 2002 VICTORIA PRIZE AND FELLOWSHIPS APPLICATIONS CLOSE APR 30
To celebrate the excellence of Victoria's world-class science,
technology and engineering, the Victorian Government awards the
prestigious Victoria Prize of $50,000. Six Victorian Fellowship overseas
study grants of $15,000 each are also awarded to encourage the
