‘Team Monash’ were out in full force at the Singapore Marathon – part of the Monash Fun Run Festival – held in scenic settings throughout the island state on Sunday 3 December.

Mr Martin Doulton, General Manager of Monash Sport, said he was “very pleased” with 2006 participant numbers, which were up significantly from last year. A total of 220 people joined 'Team Monash' for the 2006 marathon, compared to 2005 when just over 100 participants took part.

This is the second year that ‘Team Monash’ has participated in the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon as part of the university’s community fitness events program. The Monash University Alumni Association Singapore provided much needed local assistance in organising the event.

Monash University Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Larkins noted that the festival attracted a record number of participants and volunteers from among the Monash University community.

“This is a great achievement and is illustrative of the strength of the Monash community in Singapore – where some 6000 Monash graduates work and live,” Professor Larkins said.

Mr Doulton said that the Singapore Marathon is a spectacular event.

“The route was run along probably one of the world’s flattest and most beautiful courses, winding its way around the Singapore CBD parkland and docks,” he said.

“Monash participants were highly visible in their 2006 running wear, and were encouraged along the course by a spirited Monash cheer squad waving 'bang sticks and clappers’ that were specially commissioned for the event."

“Of particular note is the increase in this year’s event of currently enrolled Singapore-based Monash students and those stepping out for the first time in a major event through their participation in the 10km option."

Monash alumni were proud to have represented their former place of study in the event. "Thank you for the tireless effort in making this a fun and enjoyable event for us. It was knowing that Monash was part of it that spurred me on to join the crowd!", said alumnus and 10km run participant Mr Byron Wee (BBus 2002, BComp 2002, MBusSys 2003).
