Mentor's roles and responsibilities
As a mentor, you will play an influential role in shaping a student's perception of their professional future.
Therefore, we will give preference to applicants who have:
- at least two years' experience in their discipline or area of expertise
- a genuine interest in sharing their professional experiences with their mentee
- the ability to identify their mentee's strengths and weaknesses and foster their potential
- an adequate amount of time to meet and be in contact with their mentee and to maximise the benefits of the mentoring partnership (see below)
- the ability to provide constructive and unbiased feedback
- agreed to maintain confidentiality within the mentoring partnership
- the ability to express their points of view, listen to their mentee's opinions and to promote creative discussion
- the willingness to involve their mentee in professional networking activities
Before mentors can join the program we ask you to:
- attend a mentoring workshops (dates to be confirmed)
- attend a ‘Get to know you' event where you will be introduced to your mentee and other mentors
- coordinate periodical face-to-face meetings with your mentee throughout the academic year
- maintain regular contact with your mentee by phone or email
- establish a mentor–mentee partnership based on mutual respect, confidentiality and open communication
- encourage your mentee's creativity, self-awareness and understanding of their career needs. Assist them to acknowledge and work with their strengths and weaknesses
- attend an end-of-year recognition event in November 2009
