Mrs Fiona Balfour

Mrs Fiona Balfour (BA(Hons) 1980)

Fiona Balfour (nee Meyer) (BA(Hons) 1980) has had a distinguished career in the information technology industry and is currently a professional non-executive director for Metcash Limited (ASX:MTS), Salmat Limited (ASX:SLM) and Tower Australia (ASX:TAL). 

She provides advisory services to a number of companies. She is a member of the Advisory Board for Monash University's Faculty of Information Technology and is a Councillor of Knox Grammar School, Wahroonga.  She is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Mrs Balfour completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) majoring in history before beginning her career as a graduate recruit in the Victorian Public Service. From 1985-1991 Mrs Balfour worked in management consulting, initially with WD Scott, then Coopers and Lybrand and finally the DMR Group. During this time she completed a Graduate Diploma in Information Management and an MBA.

Fiona has more than 30 years executive experience in the services sector – across aviation, telecommunications, health administration, financial services, education and not-for-profits. Her functional expertise is information and communications technology with particular expertise in enterprise systems transformation and customer-facing technology.

Her executive career culminated in her appointments as Chief Information Officer of Qantas (2001-06) and member of the Qantas Executive Committee; and Chief Information Officer of Telstra (2006-07). She is a former Director of SITA SC, Geneva (2001-06) and a former Trustee of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (2007-11).

In 2003 she was awarded the Australian Telecommunications Users Group's Award for Excellence in Management and was a NSW finalist in the Telstra Business Woman of the Year Award. In 2006, she was awarded the National Pearcey Medal for lifetime achievement to the information technology industry.

In 2010, she became a Fellow of Monash University.
