The Honourable Bill Shorten, MP (BA 1989, LLB 1992)

Bill Shorten (BA 1989, LLB 1992) is Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation and the Member for Maribyrnong (Victoria) in the Parliament of Australia.

Prior to Prime Minister Julia Gillard's changes to the Ministry and the Cabinet in December 2011, Mr Shorten was also Assistant Treasurer. He has also had a role as Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children’s Services.

After completing his studies at Monash, Mr Shorten joined law firm Maurice, Blackburn and Cashman.

He was national secretary of the Australian Workers' Union from 2001 to 2007. He also held the position of secretary of the Victorian branch of the Australian Workers' Union from 1994 to 2006, during which time he oversaw membership increase from 16,000 to 21,000 workers.

Bill has also been a director of AustralianSuper, Australia’s largest superannuation fund and a director of the Victorian Funds Management Corporation.
