Monash community unite after bush fires

March 2009

In the aftermath of the devastating Victorian bushfires, the thoughts of the entire Monash University community are with alumni and others whose lives have been affected by last month’s tragedy.

Several Monash community members were directly impacted by the fires while others provided much-needed support to bush fire victims.

Professor Richard Larkins, Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University, said Monash will do all it can to support the victims.

“As we all come to terms with the magnitude of the bushfire tragedy our thoughts turn to what we as individuals can do to help in the aftermath of the bushfires of Saturday 7 February.”

Monash University staff were encouraged to give to the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal via payroll deduction.

A memorial service was held at Clayton for a staff member, also an alumnus, who was lost in the fires.

Monash University’s Gippsland campus has served as an important base for firefighters. It has provided accommodation and meals to those battling fires in the nearby Latrobe Valley and to people who lost their homes.

On 21 February, the campus staged a relief fund benefit concert to support Victorian bush fire victims. The event attracted around 700 people and raised $27,000 for the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund.

In different parts of the world, Monash alumni came together in the aftermath of the tragedy.

In London, a group of alumni initiated an event for fellow graduates, Australian expatriates and friends to raise money for the Bushfire Appeal.

The Monash University Alumni Association of Singapore held a minute’s silence for bush fire victims at a recent social gathering. The group also made a contribution to the Bushfire Appeal.

“Seeing photos of the aftermath of the fires was heart rending. Even though we are miles away, we wanted to find some way to contribute,” said Charles Lee, MUAAS President.

Divisional Director of Donor, Alumni and Community Relations John Kearsey said that the Monash community's thoughts and well wishes are with alumni and their families affected in any way.

“I'm touched by the many stories of heroism and inspiration. In the darkest days, voluntarism and philanthropy shine. Many of our alumni community continue to provide time and support to the victims of the fires. Through various ways, alumni have extended financial support to the appeal, contributing to the astonishing results of Australia’s generosity," said Mr Kearsey.
