Economist and scientist receive alumni awards in Indonesia

March 2008

Dr Boediono receives his award

Two Monash alumni were honoured at a recent awards ceremony in Indonesia.

Economist Dr Boediono (MEc 1972) and scientist Dr Herawati Sudoyo (PhD 1991) received their awards at the inaugural Australian Alumni Awards in Jakarta, Indonesia, last month.

The Awards are hosted by the Australian Embassy in Indonesia. The program acknowledges the contributions to Indonesia made by Indonesians who have studied at Australian schools, universities and technical colleges.

Dr Boediono is the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs in the Indonesian parliament and received the Australian Alumni Award for Sustainable and Economic Development. He was acknowledged for “his considerable contribution to Indonesia’s economic development throughout his distinguished period as Minister, as well as through his academic career as a teacher and mentor for future Indonesian economists”.

Dr Herawati Sudoyo

Dr Herawati Sudoyo, Principal Scientist and Executive Manager of the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, won the Australian Alumni Award for Research and Innovation. The award paid tribute to “her outstanding research in the field of molecular biology, which focuses on the genetic diversity of the people of Indonesia and other parts of South-East Asia, and which has contributed significantly to health management in Indonesia and for victim identification purposes in disasters”.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Mr Bill Farmer AO said he was impressed with the calibre of award nominees.

“The winners, and all the finalists in each category, have shown great leadership and achieved remarkable things in their respective fields. I am pleased to think their Australian education has contributed to their success,” said Mr Farmer.

Finalists from Monash University included Dr Dewi Fortuna Anwar (PhD 1990), Mr Donny Gunadi (MDigComms 2005) and Mr Mohamad Sobary (MA 1994).
