Two prominent members of the Monash community were inducted into the Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame in early May.

Leading Australian graphic designer and distinguished alumnus Richard Henderson (DipArtDes(FineArt) 1974) and Dean of the Faculty of Art & Design Professor John Redmond were added to the roll of honour.

Richard Henderson is the CEO and creative director of R-Co and has directed the visual identity projects for organisations including Tennis Australia, BHP Billiton and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. He received a Monash University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007.

Professor Redmond is the Foundation Dean of Art & Design at Monash University. The faculty is a focus for research and education in fine art, industrial design, interior architecture, visual communication, multimedia and digital arts, and architecture.

Other members of the Hall of Fame include design retailer Ross (RG) Madden, founder of Country Road Stephen Bennett, interior designer Sue Carr, influential graphic designers Ken Cato and Garry Emery, and Alberto Alessi (the first international inductee).

Design Institute of Australia national president Joanne Cys said that the Hall of Fame recognises the outstanding achievements of 40 designers who have contributed to the promotion of design excellence in Australia.

“The program highlights the significant contribution made by tonight’s inductees and previous Hall of fame members to Australia’s economic and cultural development and a dynamic design profession,” she said.
