Monash launches gift ware collectionDecember 2008
A collection of ceramic gift items, featuring designs by Monash alumna and staff member Caroline Durré (MA(VisArts) 1997), was launched on 11 November. The range of limited edition items includes a platter, vase, cup and saucer, along with small and large cards. The striking black and white artworks are by Caroline Durré, the great grand-daughter of Sir John Monash. Ms Durré is a highly accomplished artist whose work appears in public and private collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and BHP Billiton. The collection was instigated as part of the University’s 50th anniversary celebrations. In launching the collection, Monash University’s Vice-President (Advancement) and chair of the 50th anniversary taskforce Ron Fairchild said that the selection of the artist was a natural choice. “Caroline Durré has multiple connections with the University, as a Monash staff member, alumna, PhD student and, of course, with her strong family links,” Mr Fairchild said. Speaking at the launch, Ms Durré commented that it was appropriate the event was taking place on Remembrance Day. “Today’s date links with our military history and my work investigates the decorative and ornamental patterns from fortress and garden designs of the 17th century. The decorative forms are manipulated to defend the central spaces and act as barriers,” Ms Durré said. “Despite my family’s connection to military history, it was a surprise to me when my artwork began to investigate these elements.” Ms Durré’s work was on display in November in the Faculty of Art & Design Gallery as part of her PhD examination exhibition.
