TeamMONASH reaches record numbers at Singapore Marathon

December 2007

A record 300 TeamMONASH participants filled the streets at this year’s Singapore Marathon on Sunday 2 December.

Mr Martin Doulton, General Manager of Monash Sport, said he was “thrilled” with participant numbers in 2007, which were up significantly from last year. A total of 300 people joined 'Team Monash' for the 2007 marathon. This compares to 2006 when around 220 participants took part.

“This year, the Monash group also included a large contingent of alumni, students and staff from the Monash Sunway campus who made the journey from Malaysia to Singapore to join in,” said Mr Doulton.

“All participants proudly ran, walked or cheered under the TeamMONASH banner and stood out from the crowd by wearing their distinctive green 2007 TeamMONASH sports tops,” he said.

This is the third time TeamMONASH has taken part in the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, the longest amount of time Monash Sport has participated in event as part of its Community Fitness Event program. The course takes runners through some of Singapore’s most scenic areas including the Singapore River, Marina South, the Central Business District, East Coast Park and City Hall.

Monash alumni use the race as an opportunity to reconnect with fellow Monash graduates.

"It’s great to see Monash supporting its students after they’ve finished studying. Events like the Marathon give us the chance to get together with friends,” said Hong Kong-based alumna Joanne Poon (BBus 2002).

The Monash University Alumni Association Singapore (MUAAS) provided much needed local assistance in organising the event.

“The majority of participants were from Singapore and were very grateful for the experience to connect with each other” said Mr Charles Lee, MUAAS president.
