I am delighted to advise that the University has appointed Professor Stephen King (MEc 1988) as Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics. He will commence in the role on Monday, 19 January 2009.

Professor King comes to Monash with an outstanding record of academic leadership, scholarship and industry engagement. He is currently a Commissioner of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) where he specialises in mergers and chairs the ACCC’s Merger Review Committee.

Professor King graduated BEc with honours from ANU, receiving the University Medal for his undergraduate studies. He completed a Masters in Economics at Monash University in 1987 and also attained the degrees of Masters of Arts in Economics and Doctor of Philosophy at Harvard University.

Professor King’s research specialisation is in applied microeconomic theory, industrial organisation and regulation. He has published extensively in major international journals in a range of fields. In 1999, his article on vertical integration and access won the E. Yetton Best Paper Award for a publication in the Australian Journal of Management. Professor King has been invited to present papers at a range of international conferences in economics and law, including the World Congress of the Econometrics Society and International Bar Association conferences.

Prior to his appointment to the ACCC, he was a Professor of Economics at the University of Melbourne where he was involved in the establishment of the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia; and Professor of Management (Economics) at Melbourne Business School. He was also a Director of CoRE Research, an economic consulting firm that he co-founded. Currently he also holds an appointment as a Professorial Fellow at the University Melbourne.

Professor King is active in community engagement and has participated in the Australian economic policy debate. He was a member of the Victorian Infrastructure Planning Council and a member of the Executive Committee of the Prime Minister’s Home Ownership Task Force.

The University is fortunate to have secured such an outstanding appointee as Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics, and I am sure you will join me in welcoming Professor King to Monash early next year.

I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution being made by Professor Owen Hughes, as acting Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics. Professor Hughes will remain in this capacity until the commencement of Professor King, and will then return to his role as Deputy Dean (Education), Faculty of Business and Economics.
