Alumni groups exchange views at global summitOctober 2007
Leaders of Monash University’s alumni chapters recently gathered in Melbourne to share their ideas at the inaugural international alumni summit. The summit ran from Friday 31 August to Sunday 2 September. It was attended by association presidents and representatives from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Melbourne, Singapore and Thailand. The major achievement of the summit was a clear understanding of the needs of Monash alumni around the world. “I think the summit allowed us to make great headway to look after the interests of global alumni,” said the president of the Monash University Alumni Association of Singapore, Barathan Kumaran (BA(Human and SocSci) 1996). The summit began unofficially on Thursday 30 August with a dinner preceding the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Awards at which several alumni association founders received service awards. Highlights of this year’s summit included a series of workshops, a campus tour with international students and an address by Monash University Vice-Chancellor Richard Larkins AO. Some Monash alumni chapters were formed recently while others have a long history. The Monash University Alumni Association Thailand was founded in 2006 while the Monash University Hong Kong Alumni Association was established more than 25 years ago.
