Professor Julian Savulescu videoVoiceover: "After completing his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Monash University, Julian Savulescu took an interesting detour – he completed his PhD in philosophy, supervised by renowned philosopher Professor Peter Singer." Julian Savulescu: "One of the most important moments or times of my life was actually in first year medicine at Monash University, where I had the opportunity to do an extra subject, and the privilege to do philosophy as an extra subject. Peter Singer was teaching then, and I attended his course on practical ethics and this really sparked my interest and passion to do this later on." Voiceover: "Julian Savulescu has built a unique career – as an acclaimed educator, researcher and communicator. Since 2004, Professor Savulescu has held the Uehiro Chair in Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford." Julian Savulescu: "I would say, objectively that my greatest achievement was to get a chair in philosophy – an internationally competitive named chair – at the University of Oxford at 37. But that was really based on the foundation of my time at Monash." Voiceover: "Professor Savulescu promotes debate and discussion about ethical issues that arise from advances in medicine, and technology." Julian Savulescu: "What inspires me in my work is not to convert people or persuade people or have people agreeing with positions that I put. But what inspires me is when people come away talking or thinking about ideas and arguments." Voiceover: "Monash University pays tribute to Professor Julian Savulescu for his thought leadership and inspirational achievements in the field of ethics."
